Diaspora Mourns as Zacchaeus Talam Is Laid to Rest After Tragic Death in US

Zacchaeus Talam, widely known as Tom, will be buried today, Saturday, 30 May 2026, in his home village of Kelelwa in Baringo County following his death in the United States.

Talam, 46, was last seen on 29 April in Bethany, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. His disappearance prompted an extensive search by family, friends and members of the Kenyan diaspora, who organised vigils, prayer meetings and information-sharing campaigns in an effort to locate him.

For nearly two weeks, his whereabouts remained unknown as appeals circulated across social media and diaspora networks. The search came to an end on 9 May when authorities confirmed that his body had been recovered.

Washington County Police took custody of the remains and opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Officials have not released further details and have stated that inquiries are continuing.

News of his death was met with grief across the Kenyan community in Oregon and other parts of the diaspora. Tributes described Talam as a humble and dependable individual who maintained close ties with fellow Kenyans abroad. Vigils were held in Portland, while messages of condolence were shared by friends, relatives and community members around the world.

Community leaders have called for continued support and prayers for Talam’s family as they mourn his loss. His death has also prompted discussions within diaspora communities about the challenges immigrants can face when living far from extended family and established support networks.

As family, friends and community members gather in Baringo for his burial, Talam is being remembered for the relationships he built and the impact he had on those around him.
