Yuki Kawauchi of Japan upset Kenya's Geoffrey Kirui to win the men's race of the 2018 Boston Marathon. Kawauchi overtook Kirui in the final stretch of the race to win at a time of 2:15:58. Kirui, the defending champion in the race, crossed the finish line in 2:18:21. American (Kenyan-born) Shadrack was third at 2:18:32. Kawauchi became the first Japanese to win the men's title since 1987.
American Desiree Linden won the women's race, finishing at a time of 2:39:54 and ahead of fellow American Sarah Seller who clocked in at 2:44:05. Kristina Duchene of Canada was third at a time of 2:44:20. The top Kenyan woman finisher was Edna Kiplagat in 8th position at a time of 2:47:14. In winning the race, Linden became the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon since 1985.
