McDonald Mariga & Victor Wanyama Lose Mother

Mildred Wanyama passed away early Saturday, June 14, as confirmed by her son McDonald Mariga.

Mildred's death leaves a profound void in a sporting community where she championed female athletes and nurtured exceptional talent. Wanyama's legacy is multifaceted, encompassing her contributions as a netball player, administrator, and unwavering supporter of her children's athletic aspirations. Her commitment to netball led her to the presidency of the Kenya Netball Federation, a position she held from 2014 to 2018.

During her tenure, she implemented policies aimed at increasing investment and visibility for women's netball, advocating for the sport's advancement and recognition. Born with a passion for netball, Mildred's career trajectory showcased her dedication to breaking barriers in a field often lacking female leadership. This passion extended into her personal life when she married former AFC Leopards footballer Noah Wanyama in the 1970s. Their union formed the bedrock of a sporting dynasty that produced a remarkable roster of athletes.

Mildred Wanyama played a crucial role in guiding and shaping the careers of her five children. Her sons, McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama, achieved international acclaim in football. Mariga played for Inter Milan, and Victor became the first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League. Her other sons, Thomas and Sylvester, also pursued football careers, while her daughter, Mercy, excelled as a professional basketball player in Spain.

Beyond her family, Mildred was a respected community figure who tirelessly advocated for greater inclusivity and recognition for female athletes in Kenya. She fiercely believed in the importance of education, a value she instilled in her children. She famously intervened to prevent Mariga from joining the Kenya Defence Forces, ensuring he completed his education, a decision that ultimately paved the way for his successful European football career.

The loss of Mildred Wanyama resonates deeply within her family and across Kenya's sporting fraternity. Details regarding the burial arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
