MPs in 12th Parliament with more than one wife have petitioned their employer, the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) to review the medical cover to include all their spouses and their children.
The polygamous MPs have ganged up to demanded why the Parliamentary Service Commission scraped the cover for multiple spouses and children which was enjoyed by the previous MPs.
Responding to the MPs concerns, PSC said that it was the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and not PSC that rationalized the cover when it reviewed the remuneration and benefits for State officers in the past two Parliaments.
“The matter is not in jurisdiction of PSC but SRC which set the benefits of all State officers. PSC has taken this matter with SRC and the Speaker who chairs PSC is working behind the scenes. In the 11th Parliament five children were covered but it was reduced by the Gazette notice of July, 2017,” said Antony Njoroge, the PSC director for litigation and compliance.
Each of the 349 Members of National Assembly and 67 Senators are entitled to a Sh10 million annual medical cover.
Currently, the cover for MPs is provided by AON Insurance and it covers one spouse and four children who are under the age of 25 years, plus the MP.
Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala kick started the campaign to demand that PSC pay for medical care for his two wives and several children as was the practice in the 9th Parliament.
“I have never seen where an MP is told not to have more than four children in the medical cover,” he said.
“I was in this House and the PSC was covering two wives and all the children.”

Ndugu Raphael Wanjala, unbelievable! You are making a lot of money and should therefore be able to pay for the health insurance of your other wife and children. Times have changed Ndugu Wanjala. The days of treating our sisters/women as second class citizens are gone and that kind of mentality should always remain in the past.
