Laikipia Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru was on Saturday night forced to seek for alternative accommodation after a hotel she had book a room denied her entry after she failed to produce a marriage certificate.
Waruguru and her husband had a room reserved for them at Sunshine Upperhill hotel located in Kericho, but were turned away after failing to produce the document.
The hotel, situated opposite Kericho’s Moi Gardens, has a strict rule requiring couples to produce a marriage certificate before checking into any of their accommodation rooms.
" It is against our rules for a man and woman outside wedlock to sleep in one room," a notice outside the hotel door reads.
The MP had visited her father-in-law and other members of the extended family in Kericho together with her husband.
“I checked at the hotel at 4PM and filled the registration card which I indicated my name and my husband’s name and was given room 402,” she said as confrontation ensued with some of the hotel's attendants.
On returning at the hotel at 9pm, the two were denied access to the room they booked earlier. She said she had since developed a cold due to the harsh Kericho weather.
“My odd innocent question before Kenyans is that where in the Constitution or County Government Act states and reads that any female or male who may wish to spend a night in any given room in any hotel must produce a marriage certificate,” Waruguru said.
She left the hotel in a huff at 11pm. Waruguru said the incident embarrassed and vowed to raise the issue in Parliament.
“We will not allow any more married women and men to suffer embarrassment in the hand of hospitality industry players who feel that someone cannot spend money for a room and spend it there in a dignified way until they produce a marriage certificate,” she said.
Waruguru has in the past confessed that she's in a polygamous marriage and is happy about it.

The Owner of the Hotel could be Deeply religious. And let me say: a Christian. Next time I go there: I will make sure I have my Marriage Certificate.
The unspoken stereotype is beautiful women are seen as sluts and gold diggers and all men as cheaters and that is what happened here. The behind of this hotel owner needs to be sued till it is red hot as chilli. In addition, this owner needs to shove his moral compass attitude straight up where the sun does not shine. Ushenzi kabisa.
My understanding is that its a myth that one can catch acold due to harsh weather... Cann't sue there...I wonder why it persists.Do experts agree on this?
Anyway, isn't there any other Hotel with less restrictions somewhere there in Kericho, where married Sugar Dadies take their ndogo ndogo? It may not be what she wants, but its an option.
This news should have Mutua the moral police celebrating. How presumptuous of the Hotel to assume that all aman and awoman rent aroom for is for sexual activity? Couldn't they be two friends working on a project?(non sexual project).Besides that,I doubt if many married people carry their marriage certificate to authenticate their union. However,in the defense of the Hotel,Iwould argue that,if you know the requirements/rules,please flollow them.To some it may be bad business practice, but I dont think its against the law for aprivate Hotel to do that.Could be wrong, any constitional experts?
What is appalling me most is the "uprightness" of this Hotel.Or rather, high moral standards. Such rules are normally settled at the registration with-Kitu Kidogo. And business continues while the occupants grapple with their morals,or lack of.
Is that club owned by Mutua, the Wamuthee who teaches grownups manners? What does the useless katiba say about marriage certificate being a travel or accommodation document? How can such bush laws operate in Kenya? But maybe Waruguru refused to bribe the room keeper to be allowed in with her husband.
Mwenye hoteli hii ni lazima ajue ya kwamba Kenya si nchi ya "kikristo au Kiislamu!"
Kweli mambo haya yanaweza lutendeka baada ya miaka hamsini na minne baada ya kupata Uhuru? Maskini! Tungali watumwa wa dini potofu za kigeni.
If the Owner turns me away (and REFUNDS my Money), I will go somewhere else.
Looks like this rule applies only to male/female companionship. This rule is very short sighted. Two gay people could pose as brothers ,and get apass. If you are going to set moral standards put alist of those moral requrements in the open. The list should include but not limited to the following.
No alcohol
No married minors
No condoms
No romantic music only gospel
No mini skirts
Have to go to church or mosque...
If man was representative that question if married would never have existed...Has women takes what was for men , rules also need to change.
Who carries marriage certificate like kitambulisho. Wacheni ujizi
Reputable establishments are within their rights to set requirements for guests. Discerning customers don't want to patronize whore houses. I respect this hotel for setting high standards and sticking to them.
I didn't know you can walk around everyday with a marriage certificate in your purse! Their ID'S should prove who they are.OR maybe women should bear two names, their maiden name and marriage name , Kim Kardashian West style that might be good enough.
Am astonished her asking were in the constitution bla..blah...blah.
What we need to know she was not in a government institution, she was seeking accommodation in a private motel. Being private its has it's own rules and regulations and if one can't cope with that one is free to go somewhere else. I would wish she try to sue the motel for she will loose miserably. Secondly, cold is not contracted by being in a cold environment it's a viral disease.
Mheshimiwa Dada Mumbi:
@Mumbi, I hear you!
What ? You must show marriage certificate to stay in this hotel ? Who Carrys their marriage certificate on daily basis . Losing business over rubbish stuff . Vegas is full of hotels and casinos and they are not going down that lane. If anything they want to accommodate you the best way possible . Kenya sijui tulikosea wapi .... judging too much
If they're two adults and crime is not suspected, the rule shouldn't stand. And what about two men or two women, can they have the room?
