President Kenyatta Orders Officers Living in Police Quarters to Vacate Within 90 Days

President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered officers living in police houses to vacate within 90 days and seek private tenancy with property owners.

This follows the abolishment of the policy of mandatory and free housing for police officers by the government.

On Thursday, the President announced the introduction of housing allowances for police in a move that aims at solving the perennial accommodation crisis for officers. The move also aims at helping integrate the Kenya Police with other Kenyans.

To implement the new changes, Kenyatta directed the National Treasury to break off all leases with landlords within 90 days to allow officers seek private accommodation.

“All officers in shared houses, or those housed in structures in police lines, shall vacate them within 90 days of the date of the allowances, and integrate themselves in their communities and neighbourhoods. Separate shift quarters for male and female officers on duty and those on standby for duty will be provided,” President Kenyatta announced.

President Kenyatta said the government will build separate shift quarters for male and female officers at the police stations and police posts to ensure effective delivery of services.

He spoke during the unveiling of a policy framework and strategy for reorganizing the National Police Service at Kenya School of Government.

That’s the way to go, Policemen and their families are human beings and need to live and integrate with the community. Their children need to grow and learn to live with other people if they are to be mentally and emotionally healthy. They’ve been denied this for very long. In addition this will demystify the law enforcement personnel and will make it even easier to fight crime because criminals are members of the same communities.
