Raila Rebukes MPs over Pay Rise Demands

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has told off Members of Parliament over their push for increased pay perks.

Odinga has termed the MPs' attempt to raise their salaries and benefits as grand larceny and impunity.

In a statement dispatched to newsrooms through his spokesperson Dennis Onyango, the Orange Democratic Movement leader says it is wrong for MPs to demand higher pay when the country is experiencing hard economic times.

“He (Odinga) therefore finds the Parliamentary Service Commission Bill a case of Grand Larceny and an anti-people and insensitive demand that should be disowned and rejected as inappropriate and unacceptable to a great majority of Kenyans if not all, at this time,” the statement reads.

“Mr. Odinga is appealing to members of parliament to appreciate that the country is struggling with huge debts that cut through the broad spectrum of our economy and deficits strangling specific critical sectors.”

He further urges the parliamentarians to recognize that the country is embedded in a huge public debt and be on the forefront in demanding for prudent use of public resources.

“The SRC has warned that the pay demand by MPs, if effected, would touch off a clamour for similar raises across public sector where many spirited officers are currently doing with little to deliver much to our citizens,” adds the statement.

“Mr. Odinga appeals to the legislators to stand with the people of Kenya and also to stop the erosion of public trust in MPs through this grand larceny and grand impunity that they are trying to force on taxpayers.”

I am so pissed off beyond my capability! We need a grand " war" on these MPIGS! Really? The other day they were demanding 5 star restaurant food to be catered daily and guess who is going to pay for it? A regular mwanaichi who can only afford a meal a day. This diabolical.

They can use as much dye as they want, that ain't our major problem. Hata wakitataka gallon a day, wapewe as long as they are paying for it. My problem is corruption, impunity, career oriented political elites/dynasties, inflation and economic hardships.

Mwororo (not verified)     Mon, 12/03/2018 @ 12:38am

Let the writer make some correction. Kenya has no opposition. Raila joined Jubilee which is good. Kenya is done with these so called Dynasties. No more dancing around, Kenya needs and is ready for new and energetic leaders. We do not need eaters telling other eaters not to eat. Kenyans are tired.

Mwororo, he is hushing them in the public eye, when they are together, what he tells them is DO NOT SPOIL OUR chance for coming election...these pundas seem to be waking up to what 'we' do....hush, hush, kids.....even if you do it, please do it quietly....as quiet as you can...or just wait 'we' get in next election .... for now just eat what is edible without much ado. DYNASTIES HAVE BEEN RATTLED.....Kenyans seem to be smelling and cooking something...will they? will we, wananchi? For heaven's sake my fellow Kenyans, OPEN your eyes, TRIBALISM is only you and me....when it's the elite, hakuna kitu kama tribe, OPEN YOUR EYES!

Kenya's MPs already among the highest paid in the continent. Useless people kabisa but regular mwanainchi keeps voting them in. Greedy pigs...

It is an insult to the voters when these mpigs do not heed the cries and complaints of the masses.
Somehow they tend to ignore the fact that they are over paid and that their counterparts in many parts of the world do much better work with much less pay,and never clamour for more.
If RAO is serious,he should mobilized, and lead a protest on this matter.I say this mindful that most of these mpigs are his friends. Let's see if principle overrule "friendship".In RAO's case when it come to this issue at hand,i use "principle" loosely.
