Governor Mike Sonko to Fill Vacant Nairobi Deputy Governor Seat in Two Months

Governor Mike Sonko says he will nominate a candidate to take up the vacant Nairobi Deputy Governor seat in two months.

Sonko who appeared before the Senate County Public Investment Committee on Monday morning, further said he will unveil a new Cabinet within the same period.

The Nairobi Deputy Governor seat fell vacant in January after resignation of former holder Polycarp Igathe, who cited frosted relationship with Sonko as the reason for his departure.

"Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1pm on 31st Jan 2018. I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county," Igathe said in a statement.

Sonko had submitted the name of deported Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna to the County Assembly for vetting and approval, but the nomination was rejected on grounds of Miguna's citizenship status.

In October, Sonko announced he had narrowed down the number of shortlisted candidates for the position to two women; Jane Weru and Karen Nyamu.

“Nimareduce kutoka wale wa nne, nimebaki na Nyamu na Jane,” he said.

Ms Nyamu is a lawyer by profession while Ms Weru is the executive director of Akiba Mashinani Trust, an NGO that deals with housing development & finance.

Mkristo Sonko ni kuchaguliwa gavana ni matokeo ya mkristo Wafula Chebukati. Kiongozi huyu wa IEBC aliwapa wananchi majina ya wagombea uchaguzi watu ambao hawakustahili (did not deserve" kugombea kiti chochote katika utawala wa nchi kutokana na tabia zao mbovu ma maisha yao yaliyojaa vituko tele.
