Kenyan MPs Award Themselves over Sh70,000 Each in Weekly Night Allowance

Kenyan Members of Parliament (MPs) have reportedly awarded themselves a night allowance of more than Sh70,000 each per week.

The 416 MPs comprising of Members of National Assembly and Senators awarded themselves the hefty perks in a scheme dubbed “Domestic Subsistence Facilitation.”

Under the scheme, each MP is entitled to an allowance of between Sh18,200 and Sh24,000 four times a week for each night spent in the city attending parliamentary sittings.

This means that each of the lawmakers will pocket over Sh70,000 per week and about Sh300,000 monthly.

The night allowance was endorsed by their employer, Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) which is chaired by National Assembly Speaker Muturi.

The move comes barely a month after Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) stopped MPs from pocketing Sh300,000 each in monthly house allowance.

The move is seen as an attempt to circumvent SRC's opposition to their house allowances.

Speaker Muturi defended the night allowances, saying it would improve house attendance, and eliminate constant quorum hitches that hamper house business.

PSC based its argument on allowances payable to MPs in other countries such as Australia, where legislators receive Sh14,500 per night while the house is in session.

This parliament and senate need to be dissolved until the next election. Let have the executive and corrupt judiciary only.

Nothing new. They might as well move tp CBK and take whatever is left. No leadership, lack of process and accountability in Banana republic

Domestic subsistence facilitation - what kind of nonsense is this? Is not that what your salary and hefty benefits are for?I surely hope that all these Mpigs get kicked out of parliament come 2022.These are the most greedy people I have seen.I never hear them fight for minimum wage,or high standard of living for the common man.
Next contrived benefit will be the-We met the quorum benefit.
Surely there has to be someone opposing this greed. These "thieves" are not suffering financially,so why not make this DSF afree good will to the public.
Iwill not be surprised if there a committee within the parliament assigned to find and come up with ways and means of increasing their salaries, and benefits. If this make-your-own-salary option is not for all Kenyans workers, then it should be declared "illegal".What they are doing is no more important than what other workers do to build Kenya.

How can Kenyan Mps compare themselves to Australian counterparts. Australia is a first world country, corruption of public resources is minimal, there people enjoy a substantially reasonable living lifestyles, low unemployment etc while Kenya is the opposite. Tell me when will our Kenyan Mps stand and do the right thing?

@Bannardo these thugs must think Kenya is a first world country. They really do not understand that it takes serious sacrifices to elevate the country higher. Why should they be sitting in the night instead of making use of the daylight hours so as to be home with their wives and husbands at night? They should roll out all their night agenda and accomplishments for the tax payers to see when their monkey business is on rise. In addition no quorum should result in harsh penalties and finally removal or recall.

The average primary school teacher salary in Australia is $64,798. Nurses in Australia make $65,000 per year on average. Why compare MP perks with 1st World nations while the common mwananchi is slaving for peanuts.

Here we go again. The insatiable ingrates. Did wananchi send you to Parliament to grow your big stomachs? Salary hikes and allowances are the only things you wholly agree on 100%. Are there no moral beings among you? You may eat as much as you want but wananchi are watching. When we have a crumbling health sector, poor government services, very high unemployment, increasing street population all you think about is “bed” allowance? No wonder we longer see you as MPs: You are a man eat man group of ungrateful and gluttonous bunch of thieves. The name honorable is no longer meaningful before your names. When will you be satisfied? Are you like graves that are never satisfied even if they swallow as many dead bodies as possible. You have made us sick and tired of you.

Kenya is not Australia. The cost of living in Australia is 10 times that of Kenya, and the MPs there actually need the money that they are paid, to do their work.

We should demand a real public corruption unit whereby all public officials are held accountable for their actions. These guys are committing financial crimes on a daily basis and getting away with it. It is about time. Probe these fleecing and indict the conmen. Too much public corruption all over the country. It is time. The whole government is corrupt.
