Kenyan Man Kills Person in Custody, Injures Sheriff's Deputies after He Crashes into Patrol Car in Houston, Texas

Houston, TX - A vehicle being driven by a Kenyan man crashed into a Harris county sheriff deputy patrol car on Sunday and killed another man who was being transported to jail.

Investigators say a 42-year-old man was being transported to jail for drunken driving when 39-year-old Patrick Mukuria Njogu, driving a Lexus car, slammed head-on into their patrol car as they were entering the tollway.

Harris County District Attorney’s Office say Nogu was driving on the wrong way for quite a while along Westpark Tollway when he slammed into the cruiser. "It wasn’t like a wrong turn… The information we have -- this guy was going for quite a while the wrong-way on the Westpark Tollway before he hit these three people,” said Sean Teare, of the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

The arrested man died while on his way to the hospital. One of the deputies suffered two broken bones in his foot while the other suffered a concussion. Njogu suffered a broken foot in the crash that happened at 11:30pm, say authorities. Both sheriff deputies and Njogu were rushed to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.

Authorities say Njogu’s blood alcohol content at the time of the crash was 0.23, nearly three times the legal limit.

Authorities add that Njogu has multiple previous arrests for drunken driving. “It is not his first or his second or, sadly, even his third,” Teare of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said in a press conference. Records indicate Nogu has been arrested at least five times in various states in connection with drunken driving charges, including three DWI convictions Illinois and Missouri.

The District Attorney’s office says Njogu will be charged with first-degree felony murder and intoxication assault of a peace officer.

Sasa shetani umemtoa wapi? He looks over 40 so can't be peer pressure either. Just a simple case of alcoholism. A hard liquor blackout to be specific. When blood alcohol reaches 0.15 or more, you black out, engage in routine or dangerous behaviours and can't remember s#it after you PASS out and wake up.

Condolences to the family that lost their loved one and quick recovery to sheriff deputy. How unfortunate that someone had to die and a deputy injured for this guy to stop the nonsense of drinking and driving. There are so many options of getting places nowadays with Uber dominating. Why risk you freedom and lives of others? If this guy was driving the wrong way for awhile he must have been blacked out yet somehow functioning. Wakenya wenzangu, enjoy your drink but don’t take this kind of a risk. Looks like Njogu now belongs in jail wishing that night would not have happened.

What about the passenger in the police cruiser?
What about the painful death that he endured?
What about his family and their grief?
What about the two deputies that endured the trauma of the accident and now face many months of medical expenses, procedures and treatment?
What about the deputies' families that have to watch them needlessly suffer?

This is a tragedy whichever way you look at it...two families are in mourning. Being a repeat offender, Njogu must have been dealing with bigger issues than just the bottle. May the family of the dead and Njogus as well find a way to cope.

@John, zip it up please. Nobody in this world have a license to drive when drunk. So your cousin is so special? What is the family that lost their loved one going through? What about the deputies and their families? Do not be selfish that only your family members are important na watu wengine maisha yao haina maana. Yes locking him for life is better for the lives of other people.

John, with all due respect, I agree you with to some degree about using appropriate language by being respectful. However, the behaviour of this fellow is despicable. There is no excuse whatsoever to get drunk to that level, get behind the wheel to cause such a tragedy. Accidents happen, but this is absolute ignorance, unacceptable to even suggest he going was through stuff(people go through shit!!!) but you don't get behind the wheel or murder someone just because life is hell for you. Its not even his first time to have a DUI, which now makes it a habit for him. I don't see how anyone can see this case otherwise, this guy committed murder, will expire in prison and he got no one to blame but himself!!! All I can say God is the one who can absolve him the guilty.

If you get yourself in such a situation don’t rush to big mouth you have no idea what he was going through in his life so talking trush means how your minds are full of shit

No amount of “going through” justifies repeated dangerous DWIs/DUIs. He is grown man to know what he was doing was a danger to himself and others. If he was “going through”, he should have sought help, go for counseling, see a doctor, divorce your wife, or pay IRS (whatever the issue was). My dad lives with me and l noticed he had started becoming very forgetful and sometimes would pass red lights. I stopped him from driving to avoid such tragedies.

John, did you try to help him overcome his addiction, did you offer a ride, a cab, an uber or anything on the fateful day? Soon he will be a convicted murderer and no amount of foot stomping will change that. He killed someone due to his criminal behavior and you can't change that. He will no longer put others in jeopardy on the streets. He is a grown man and actions have consequences. Accept this, learn and move on.

Definitely this fellow had aproblem with alcohol. At least cited 3 time for driving drunk! You wonder how many times he had driven drunk...
Now some one is dead, and others hurt. This could have been avoided long time ago, if only the fellow had accepted that he had aproblem with drinking, and worse,he continued to drive drunk.Terrible mistake.
Like they say, its cheaper to get a cab. This one is very very expensive. The problem now is that there are those who still do it despite reading what has befallen this brother...If only we can make the right choices at the right time.
Self driving cars will one day cut DUI drastically. Till then, dont drink and drive.I say this knowing that it will fall on deaf ears.Yes some lessons are very tragic, and painful. We cannot undo what has happened, but we can learn from it.

1. Kuendesha gari kwa upande usiokubaliwa.
2. Kuendesha gari akiwa mlevi wa kupindukia.

Am not surprised. This is a tragedy as well as a major crime. Most of my country men and women get real drunk on weekends. This is sickening. Right after partying all night long they get into their vehicles and hit the road. Tragedies waiting to happen every time. They usually laugh or ignore my plead not to drive while drunk. This is a major problem in our community. Life as well as careers are being destroyed due to drunk driving. I just thank God I never had the use for alcohol.

When I drink I don't drive and when I drive I drink water. Njogu, you had coming and you only have yourself to blame. Pole to the passenger who died and the peace officer. Tafadhali wacha gari kwa bar ukilewa au uite mtu sober au uchukue uber, ukitaka maisha bora.

How many of us text and drive? it is arguably worse than drunk driving and yet we are here casting stones.. we all do things that endanger others, driving and drinking is a serious issue and also the legal system that keeps releasing a habitual drunk after all these convictions. There is technology right now that can be used so that nobody is able to start a car if they have any detectable alcohol content in them but it is not being used for some weird reasons

He'd be better off if he had also died. Texas will probably give him the max 99 years. All because of several
damn drinks. While alcoholism is a disease, I wonder if drunks ever see the entire stupidity around this. I mean, 3 DUIs in as many states, come on, this was a long time coming.

It is very important to learn how to manage stress and frustrations. Women need to support the husbands / boyfriend when in crisis. Talking down your man will just make the situation worse. Why do I get the feeling the White Lexus belonged to a woman? Jijazieni.

Very unfortunate or bad luck. Condolence to the family and quick recovery to the officer's. KUSH my brother all will be well. Devil is a liar, amen.

Well, they also said that they plan to investigate the pub that got him drunk to that level. In as much as pubs make a killing out of drunkards, they also have a responsibility believe it or not. Otherwise of what use will that reveller be behind bars or even dead. There have been known cases of bar maids/men in Kenyan pubs around Texas to spike people's drinks, Halafu? Iko siku moja watapatikana.
@John, peleka ufala mbali sana. Better accept reality and work on the next steps with your "beloved" cousin. If you knew that he was going through shit and also gets stupidly drunk you should've chained him, for God's sake you should've locked his doors, apasue kama yeye ni mwanamme kamili. Atleast you would've been dealing with a different case rather than taking someone's life. Ama you think that your cousin's life is more precious than others? Tena you better pray for the quick and complete recovery of the cops who got injured.
To the Kenyan community, lets call a spade a spade. Please stay sane and stay safe. Ile hustle unapitia on a daily basis ni wewe tu unafahamu, vitu zingine may seem enticing but always think long and hard before embarking on things that can get you in trouble. Unapata mtu amekunywa vizuri pub amelewa kulewa na anaeda after-party at 3am, driving some 30-40 miles away, recklessly or even blacked out. Afadhali ulale ndani ya gari lako, u black-out huko. Where is the decency in drinking taratibu and going home without incidents? It is possible to have fun and not kill anyone while at it. But Wakenya ni nani?
