Policeman Among Five Arrested in Botched Sh28 Million KCB Bank Robbery

A police officer is among five suspects arrested over the weekend in connection with a botched bank robbery in Busia town.

Three of the suspects were nabbed inside Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Busia town Branch while attempting to withdraw Sh28.5 million from a client’s account.

The other two were apprehended in Ahero, Kisumu as they tried to escape from the police.

Bank officials became suspicious after the suspects presented a fake Identity Card that was not reflective of the owner’s account.

“The bank manager alerted the police and they immediately visited the area and arrested the suspects,” Busia County Police Commander John Nyoike said.

The five suspects are Bhavin Ramesh, Vijay Jamnaday, Desmond Lusweti, Alex Kimeli, and Police constable Kipkirui Tanui, who is attached to the Wilson Airport Police Station in Nairobi.

Ramesh, Jamnaday, and Lusweti entered the banking hall to execute the fraudulent transaction as Kipkirui and Kimeli waited for them in a standby car outside the bank premises.

Kipkirui and Kimeli drove off after learning their accomplices had been arrested, leading to a chase that ended in Ahero.

The suspects are being held in lawful custody pending arraignment in court.
