11 Prisoners Escape from Police Cell After Drilling Through Wall

Police have launched a search for 11 prisoners who escaped from a cell at Bungoma Police Station on Sunday morning.

The suspects sneaked out after drilling a hole through the cell’s wall, according to Bungoma South OCPD Willison Nanga, who confirmed the incident. 

Nanga said one of the suspects named Isaac Wekesa was shot on his thigh as he tried to escape and was taken to Bungoma Referral Hospital for treatment.

Those who escaped had been arrested for various offenses including robbery with violence, burglary, assault, impersonation, stealing, and defilement.  

They are Brian Ochieng Onyango (robbery with violence), John Wanyonyi (robbery with violence), Clerkson Otieno (burglary), Simon Wekesa (assault), Collins Juma Nyukuri (assault), Alex Simiyu Muyekho (stealing), Bramwell Barasa (defilement), Pascal Kiberenge Namasaka (impersonation), Emmanuel Wakoko (assault), and John Barasa Wekesa (breaking and stealing).

Nanga said the suspects were seen running towards a nearby bush at an Airstrip area and warned members of the public against. 

“We are calling upon the residents to volunteer any information to the police because these are hardcore criminals,” he said.

A police report indicates that at around 3 am, other prisoners alerted officers manning the station that some of their colleagues had escaped from one of the cells.

“The escapees had cut an angle line metal bar that reinforced the cell's door and used the same to dig the hole,” reads the report.
