Kenyan Man Busted Manufacturing Fake Tomato Sauce Using Chemicals, 3,000 Liters Nabbed

Police in Nakuru arrested one suspect after he was found manufacturing fake tomato sauce at a secret in a two-roomed house.

Officers raided the residential house in Nakuru’s Langalanga estate on Saturday following a tip-off from members of the public.

3,000 liters of chemically-made tomato sauce dubbed “Sky Light” were recovered during the operation. The sauce had been packed in five-liter and three-liter containers.

Addressing the media after the raid, Nakuru East Sub County Police Commander Hellena Kabukuru said bags of sugar, food colors, and preservatives among other ingredients used to make the fake sauce were seized.

Also found in the illegal factory were several counterfeit Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) stickers, labels, hundreds of empty jerry cans, and big sufurias.

Police believe the suspects have been running the illegal business for about one year without detection. The fake products are sold to operators of fast-food eateries across the county.

“One suspect who was arrested at the scene is already in police custody being processed to appear in court on Monday,” Kabukuru said adding that police are looking for his accomplice who is on the run.

A video of the raid showed the fake sauce simmering in pans in a kitchen and several filthy high-capacity tanks where the ready sauce was being stored before being packed in small containers.

Ironically, the labels listed fresh tomatoes as one of the ingredients used to manufacture the sauce.
