Family Pleads for Government Help as Kenyan Woman Detained in Egypt

21-year-old Kenyan woman Linet Makena has been detained by authorities since May 8th due to expired immigration paperwork.

This seemingly bureaucratic issue has escalated into a matter of life and liberty. Linet's journey to Egypt began in 2018 with aspirations for a better life. She sought employment as a domestic worker, intending to join a relative in the North African nation. Fate, however, intervened. Love blossomed between her and a Tanzanian man, resulting in the birth of their child in 2019. Unfortunately, the relationship did not endure and the man returned to Tanzania leaving Linet to raise their child alone.

This turn of events plunged Linet into hardship. Her child's illness compounded the difficulties of being an undocumented single mother. Fear became a constant companion as her visa expired in February 2024. To avoid detection by the authorities, she resorted to desperate measures. Linet's family in Kenya is now engaged in a fervent plea for governmental intervention. Their efforts to raise funds for her return have yielded a meagre Sh 2,000, a far cry from the Sh 200,000 needed.

Her mother, a domestic worker herself, tearfully expresses her condition: "I have no means to buy them tickets. I am consumed by fear for my daughter and her child."

Linet's predicament is not unique. Kenyan citizens abroad, like the two individuals coerced into labour in Taiwan this April, often find themselves trapped in foreign countries due to unforeseen circumstances. These cases illuminate the plight of vulnerable Kenyan migrants and underscore the critical need for robust government support systems. As Linet awaits an uncertain future in an Egyptian cell, her family desperately implores the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene. Their hope rests on the principles of compassion and diplomacy, urging for their daughter's release.

Why imprison and not just deport and who in their right mind expects an Arab to treat them with mercy or kindness. These people are animals she should have followed her ex to Tanzania if she did not want to return to Kenya then divorce him over there

If it's just a matter of expired documents why not deport her? Iam sure the two governments can find an empty sit on one of the many flights in and out of the two countries.
Anyway,What I want to point out is that women bear the brunt of the burden when a relationship goes south. In this case, when a child results in the union. The TZ man apparently just walked away...not many mothers can do that. So you men who impregnate women and run think about it. Is it not better to just send the money...?Yes think about it. The child crying at all odd times of the night and day. Heavens forbid the child gets sick.Sure men have survived raising kids by themselves, but this is not a scenario many men would welcome. So you men pay up for the upkeep. Its cheaper.

Comrade Maxiley,
What's the root cause?
Let's all agree on one simple fact. If the Kenyan economy was good, mostly we wouldn't be hearing about this cases.
Some of us in diaspora were forced to look for greener pastures because, even having graduated jobs were not there.
Secondly corruption.
Thirdly insecurity.

@ Kora Kanini, It comes down to poor governance. If at one time we were at par with countries like South Korea, and Singapore, economically speaking, then what happened? How come we have stagnated at best, and regressed at worst.
We have leaders whose interest is only in extending their bellies, and those of their friends and families.
We have to go back to the drawing board . Retrace our path backwards till where we deviated and take corrective measures. We have to have the collective will to create better communities, and make our country better for all. It can be done.
