Dog Who Stayed at Owner’s Graveside for a Decade Inspires New Law in Brazil
A new law in São Paulo state allows families to bury their pets alongside them, following the story of a dog who spent a decade living in a cemetery after his owner's death.
The legislation, known as the Bob Coveiro Law, was inspired by the loyalty of a dog named Bob, who refused to leave his owner's grave in Taboão da Serra after attending the funeral. Despite efforts to take him home, Bob remained at the cemetery, offering comfort to mourners and becoming a local symbol of devotion.
He was eventually buried beside his owner in 2021 after being struck by a vehicle.
The new law acknowledges the deep emotional connection between humans and their pets, allowing cats and dogs to be interred in family graves, subject to sanitary regulations. Funeral services will manage the arrangements.
Representative Eduardo Nóbrega, one of the law’s sponsors, called the measure a recognition of pets as family members and an affirmation that “love does not end at goodbye.”
Bob’s legacy has already been commemorated in the area. A statue in his honour was funded by the animal charity Patre, which noted that his presence had often brought comfort to grieving families.
