After World Cup Visa Setback, Somali Referee Artan Lands UEFA Super Cup Assignment

Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan will officiate the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg on 12 August, UEFA has confirmed.

The appointment comes after a difficult summer for the 34-year-old official, who was unable to take part in the World Cup despite being selected for the tournament's refereeing team. Artan had been named among the officials for the World Cup, which runs from 11 June to 19 July.

However, his involvement ended before the competition began when United States authorities denied him entry, despite him holding a valid visa. The decision prevented him from officiating at football's biggest tournament.

UEFA said Artan's appointment reflects its confidence in his abilities and forms part of a new cooperation agreement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The partnership is intended to strengthen relations between the organisations and create more opportunities for African match officials in European competitions.

The Super Cup will see Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain face Europa League holders Aston Villa in Salzburg. The annual fixture traditionally brings together the winners of Europe's two major club competitions.
