Chief Justice Koome Announces Warsame as Supreme Court Nominee
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has nominated Court of Appeal judge Mohamed Warsame for appointment to Kenya’s Supreme Court.
The nomination follows a series of public interviews in Nairobi, where candidates were assessed on integrity, professional competence, and their approach to constitutional interpretation. Chief Justice Martha Koome confirmed the decision on Wednesday, saying that the process complied with constitutional requirements and was conducted transparently.
She said the commission prioritised accountability and inclusivity at each stage. Warsame has previously maintained that Islamic law aligns with principles of justice and should not be regarded as merely a cultural practice.
The process now moves to the executive and legislative branches. President William Ruto is expected to formally appoint Warsame, subject to approval by the National Assembly. If approved, he will become the 14th judge to serve on the Supreme Court and will restore the bench to its full complement of seven members.
The vacancy arose following the death of Justice Mohamed Ibrahim in December 2025. The appointment comes at a critical time, with the 2027 General Election approaching.
The Supreme Court is expected to handle key disputes, including presidential election petitions. Warsame’s experience at the Court of Appeal and his judicial approach are likely to influence the court’s handling of significant constitutional matters.
