Kenya Takes Diaspora Trade Mission to Toronto

Kenya will hold a diaspora engagement and trade mission in Toronto on Saturday, 5 September, as it seeks to strengthen economic ties with Canada.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs through the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, will take place from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Toronto Metro Hall, 55 John Street. The mission will provide a platform for Kenyan officials and members of the diaspora to discuss issues affecting Kenyans in Canada and explore opportunities for trade and investment between the two countries.

The Kenya High Commission in Ottawa and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) are among the key institutions involved in the event. KNCCI, which is marking 60 years of promoting trade and industry, is expected to help connect Kenyan businesses with potential Canadian partners.

Discussions are expected to cover market access, business expansion and partnerships across various sectors. The initiative is also intended to help Kenyan entrepreneurs identify opportunities in the Canadian market.

Diaspora engagement has become an important part of Kenya’s foreign policy, with the government seeking to involve Kenyans abroad in investment, entrepreneurship and economic development. Canada, which has a sizeable Kenyan community, is considered an important market for these efforts.

The Toronto mission forms part of Kenya’s broader efforts to use diaspora networks to expand trade and investment opportunities internationally. Direct engagement with Kenyans abroad is also intended to help the government better understand their concerns while drawing on their skills, capital and international business connections.
