Kenya, Russia Hold Talks on Welfare of Kenyans Living in Russia

Russia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Vsevolod Igorevich Tkachenko, has held talks with Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu on the welfare of Kenyans living in Russia.

Tkachenko met Njogu during a courtesy visit to the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, where they discussed the experiences of Kenyan nationals in Russia and consular matters requiring cooperation between the two governments.

The meeting comes as Nairobi continues to strengthen engagement with governments in countries where large numbers of Kenyans live, work or study.

The State Department for Diaspora Affairs has placed greater emphasis on maintaining communication with host governments to help address the concerns of citizens abroad. The talks also built on discussions held earlier this year when Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi travelled to Moscow accompanied by Njogu. The visit provided an opportunity for the two countries to maintain diplomatic dialogue and identify areas for practical cooperation.

The latest meeting also covered the wider links between Kenyans and Russians in education, culture and professional activities. Kenyan students, workers and professionals in Russia may require assistance with documentation, legal matters and other consular issues, making coordination between the two governments important.

Consular cooperation forms part of Kenya and Russia’s broader bilateral relationship. Regular engagement between diplomatic and government officials provides a channel for addressing issues affecting Kenyan nationals and supporting closer people-to-people ties.

The State Department for Diaspora Affairs said both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued engagement and closer cooperation.
