This is the news from Mwakilishi.com.
Good evening. It's 6 o'clock this evening on Wednesday, the twenty-eighth of October, and here is your evening edition.
Coming up.
Bayern Munich and Ajax to open the Raila Odinga Stadium in January twenty twenty-seven.
Signs of life detected under collapsed Eastleigh building as rescuers race against time.
Dozens feared dead as two trains collide south of Madrid.
Those stories, and more, in the next few minutes.
Turning to diaspora news, Australia's Senate has formally honoured Antony Kamau, president of Kenyans in Queensland, for supporting the diaspora and promoting multicultural integration. The recognition was marked with a ceremonial display of the Australian flag in the Senate Chamber on the twenty-eighth of February, twenty twenty-four, after a presentation by Senator Paul Scarr. Kenya's State Department for Diaspora Affairs says Kamau's leadership has raised the visibility of Kenyans in Australia and strengthened community links. His work focuses on professional development, civic engagement, mentorship and community support.
Staying with the diaspora, the Kenyan Embassy in Doha has pledged to strengthen ties with citizens in Qatar and support community welfare programmes. Ambassador Mohamed Nur Adan met Felix Cheruiyot of Gulf Good Vibes to discuss mental health awareness and peer support for Kenyan migrants. He also met artist Abdulrahman Hussein, who works with Qatar Museums and recently gained recognition from cultural leader Sheikha Al Mayassa. The embassy says the meetings reflect a broader effort to maintain active links with Kenyans abroad and back social welfare initiatives.
Turning to Kenya, President William Ruto has announced the Raila Odinga International Stadium will officially open on January the fifth, twenty twenty-seven, with a friendly between Bayern Munich and AFC Ajax. State House had teased a six p.m. national address carrying a major announcement. The private sector will fully fund the fixture, which honours the late Raila Odinga, a passionate football fan who studied in Germany. The sixty-thousand-seater stadium along Ngong Road has cost upwards of forty-eight billion shillings, as Kenya prepares to co-host AFCON.
Also in Kenya, a police inspector suspected of masterminding the murders of Doctor Mutiso and Mbobu has been detained for fourteen days. The officer, identified in Daily Nation reporting as Inspector Sang, is being held for two weeks while detectives pursue one of the country's most closely followed murder cases. The newspaper describes him as the suspected mastermind of the killings. Reporting has traced hideouts linked to him, people believed to have assisted him, and a connection to Uganda. No determination has been made on formal charges.
Staying with Kenya, rescuers have detected signs of life from two people beneath a collapsed sixteen-storey building in Eastleigh. National Disaster Management Director Duncan Onyango says acoustic detectors operated by Chinese experts and the Kenya Red Cross picked up the signals, but detection does not guarantee immediate rescue. The confined site along Yusuf Haji Avenue allows access from only one side. Rowdy youths raided county trucks hauling scrap metal. Operations are nearly eighty percent complete, and no victims have been rescued or recovered since Saturday.
In Kenyan politics, the Jubilee Party has formed a three-member team to negotiate coalition agreements with opposition groups ahead of the twenty twenty-seven election. Former Murang'a Senator Kembi Gitura will chair the Inter-Party Coalition Building Committee, serving alongside Secretary General Moitalel Ole Kenta and Janet Ong'era. The panel will review the draft deed for the Ukombozi Alliance and talk to other like-minded parties. The decision followed recommendations by Party Leader Fred Matiang'i. Lucy Kashu becomes interim Women's Caucus chairperson and Madina Mahat interim Deputy National Organising Secretary.
Also from Kenya, flight attendants David Kimotho and John Muchina have received the First Class Order of Zayed, one of the UAE's highest civil honours, for bravery during a mid-air axe attack. Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan presented the award on Tuesday. The honour followed the September thirtieth emergency on Flydubai Flight FZ ten seventy-three, when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar with an axe inside the cockpit. Cabin footage verified by Reuters showed the two Kenyans speaking Swahili as they comforted the wounded pilot.
Still with President Ruto, he has urged Russian investors to set up manufacturing hubs in Kenya, pitching the country as a gateway to East and Central Africa. Addressing the Russia-Kenya Business Roundtable in Moscow, Ruto said bilateral trade reached three hundred and eighty million dollars in twenty twenty-five, yet Kenya exported just fifty-two million against imports of three hundred and thirty million. Kenya sells tea, coffee, cut flowers and vegetables to Russia, and buys wheat, fertiliser, iron and steel. He wants Russian capital focused on value addition.
And in Kenya, the family of Agnes Wanjiru has learned by chance that the UK extradition hearing for her alleged killer has been postponed to May twenty-fourth, twenty twenty-seven. Fourteen-year-old Stacy Wanjiru, Agnes's daughter, had fundraised to attend a five-day hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court starting in mid-November. Instead, the family discovered through the British Embassy that proceedings against former British soldier Robert James Purkiss were delayed, with no reason given. Agnes disappeared from Nanyuki in twenty twelve. Her body was found in a hotel septic tank.
In health news, twenty people have been discharged from quarantine in Kenya, with ninety-eight others remaining under monitoring amid the Ebola scare. A quarantine centre has been operating in Nairobi, and the Daily Nation has published a first-person account of daily life inside the facility. No further details were available about those discharged. Ebola is a viral haemorrhagic fever and one of the deadliest diseases known to infect humans, with an average case fatality rate of around fifty percent. People are not infectious until they develop symptoms.
Turning to world news, dozens of people are feared dead after two trains collided south of Madrid in Spain. The crash occurred in Toledo province, involving trains carrying more than five hundred passengers in total. No official death toll has been confirmed, and the full extent of the casualties was still being established. No cause has been put forward, and the type of services involved remains unclear. The Madrid to Toledo corridor carries heavy daily rail traffic, including high-speed services covering the distance in roughly thirty minutes.
