UK Police Continue Investigation into Mysterious Death of Kenyan Student Nelbert Kipruto

Kenyan nursing student Nelbert Kipruto Rirei was buried on Saturday, October 31, at his family home in Nariri Village, Kesses, Uasin Gishu County, while medical examiners in the United Kingdom continue laboratory tests to determine how he died.
A post-mortem examination carried out by UK pathologists found no physical trauma or suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. However, the exact cause of death remains unknown, leaving his family waiting for further toxicological and laboratory results.
Rirei had been living and working in Cambridge before his disappearance on Thursday, October 8. He was last seen at around 9pm after being dropped off at a shop in Chesterton following a work shift.
Concerns grew the following morning when he failed to return home and his phone went off. His roommate reported him missing to the police, prompting searches by local authorities, friends, and members of the Kenyan diaspora community.
UK police later recovered his body from the River Cam in Cambridge and confirmed his identity to community leaders.
Before his body was repatriated to Kenya for burial, family members and close friends gathered at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for a private viewing of his remains.
Following the hospital visit, members of the Kenyan diaspora in the UK organized a riverside memorial along the River Cam on Friday, October 16, 2026. Mourners brought flowers and stood in quiet remembrance at the site where his body was found.
Sydney Komol Lang, who shared details of the tribute on Facebook alongside a photo taken by Amos Kuwako, described the gathering as an emotional show of support to ensure the family did not face the loss alone.
The burial in Kesses was attended by family, relatives, and friends who gathered to pay their final respects.
Speaking after the burial, a friend described the ceremony as solemn and dignified, expressing gratitude to those who provided financial contributions, messages, prayers, and physical support.
"The burial took place in a solemn and dignified manner, surrounded by family, friends and loved ones who came to pay their final respects," the friend said.
"We will surely miss our dear friend Nelbert. His memory, kindness, and the times we shared with him will remain in our hearts," the friend added.
UK police investigations and laboratory procedures remain ongoing to help clarify the events leading up to Rirei's death during his final hours.
