Kenyans living in Washington DC, United States, have opposed President William Ruto's proposal to engage the public through the recently launched National Multi-Sectoral Forum.
Instead, they demand that the Head of State directly address the Gen Z population within the nation. The Finance Bill 2024, originally proposed to address economic challenges and secure concessional financing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has catalysed widespread discontent. Many Kenyans view the bill as an additional burden on their already strained financial situations with proposed tax increases affecting ordinary citizens who were already struggling with economic hardships.
Led by spokesperson Fan Murianki, Kenyans in the US unequivocally express their opposition to the bill, rejecting its potential impact on their lives and demanding its withdrawal. These protests represent the collective voice of a diaspora community determined to be heard. The pressure from protesters ultimately led to President William Ruto's decision to withdraw the Finance Bill. In a televised address, he acknowledged the public outcry, stating, "Listening keenly to the people of Kenya who have said loudly that they want nothing to do with this finance bill 2024, I concede." However, activists like Hanifa Adan have dismissed this move as superficial, emphasizing that the lives lost during the protests cannot be restored.
The IMF's Structural Adjustment Programme played a significant role in shaping the Finance Bill, leading many Kenyans to hold the organization accountable for the economic conditions that have fueled civil unrest. They are now calling on the IMF Mission Chief to Kenya Haimanot Teferra to take responsibility for her role in this crisis. The involvement of US Congressmen in the Kenyan Parliament has further intensified the diaspora's concerns. The endorsement of the tax bill by Representatives Vern Buchanan, Gwen Moore, Dan Kidee, Nael Dunn, Jodey Arrington, and Drew Ferguson has raised questions, prompting Kenyans to urge these leaders to reconsider their support for the Ruto administration.
Amidst the unrest, the Kenya Red Cross and health workers have demonstrated remarkable bravery by risking their lives to provide emergency care to injured protesters. In response to these events, Kenyans in the US are organizing a fundraising campaign to sustain initiatives that promote justice, transparency, and accountability.

Wrong headline.I called my in-laws and Kenyan village mates who live in DC who said they read those news in Mwakilishi. My friends in Dallas said they were un-aware of such protests. But all of them and I are opposed to the finance bill.Opposing the bill is not enough without overhauling the 2010 poop constitution to downsize the bloated/duplicating government. The katiba was/is a scam.6.2 hungry billionaires chose to enslave all other Kenyans to finance the luxurious live style of less than 4000 gangsters.
It’s not Kenyans in the USA. It’s a section of the same political haters who have not recovered from 2022 election loss. The same hooligans and protesters. Only if they were not in the US, they would have burned buildings and looted peoples property just like their counterparts in Kenya.
These are the Chereras talking as if Gen Z are more Kenyan than the rest or have more rights then the constitution itself.
They don’t represent the diaspora but their own outlandish political agenda. These are the daily miserable propagandist's who are ill bent and always praying for the government to fail.
I🤡am Not a Ruto fan. But my Question is:
Why can't these KENYAn Diasporans go Join Gen Z (in KENYA Protests) instead of Talking the Talk over Walking the Talk back Home? *Wacheni kuwaAdaa waKENYA Abroad; Nendeni muOngelee KENYA.🤡
REmittance would go down
Correction, please! Just a handful of folks. Not everyone.
NONSENSE!!! Just a few busybodies marijuana smokers led by conman cannabis hisself!!!!
I pray the president meets z at stadium with pen and paper and pass the mic all day then implement their stuff accordingly and focus on the masses not the bigwigs who are comfy. With that done then they might fall in love again

When the dust has settled so to speak, I would like for our leaders to take home a very important lesson. And that lesson is 'cease and desist' from deceiving the public, and stealing public funds. This is an insult to their intelligence. Not only that, but it is unconscionable lying to your boss/the voters. The consequences might be catastrophic,, to say the least...as witnessed in the past few days. The masses, especially Gen x and Gen Z are very enlightened, and educated.Partly thanks to technological advancement at their disposal, and intolerance to corruption, false promises and bad governance.
Our leaders should also stop comparing our country to other countries. This is avery lame excuse intended to deflect attention from serious issue. In case in point; Dr. Ruto claimed that Kenyans were paying low taxes compared to other countries. You were elected to make Kenya a better country than when you took the reigns. That's your job.Let other countries deal with their tax problems the way the see fit for them. Why are you even comparing.Does that makes you feel better?
Finally, our leaders have to take their work seriously. They are being paid handsomely for their output, which is below 30%...Accountability,and transparency are just mere words to be thrown around to garner votes, and make politicians sound serious.
If you cannot do your job, step down or you will be forced out.And that's the best lesson they can take post-maandamano. Folks what I have typed here is nothing new.Mwananchi have been saying this for years;only that it has never been taken seriously. We hope it to be different this time around. And that's what learning a lesson is.My two cents.
