Rigathi Gachagua: Kenyans Will Give Me a Chance to Lead in 2027
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has confirmed he will pursue a presidential bid in 2027, despite legal restrictions linked to his 2024 impeachment.
Gachagua maintains that his appeal against the impeachment decision removes any barrier to holding public office. He was removed from office by the Senate after a political dispute with President William Ruto. Since then, he has stepped up political activity under the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) and promoted the “wantam” message, urging that Ruto serve only one term.
He has positioned himself within the opposition as a potential flagbearer. However, competition remains strong, with leaders such as Martha Karua and Kalonzo Musyoka also seeking to secure a joint ticket. Gachagua has expressed confidence in his public support, while Ruto has criticised opposition leaders, accusing them of promoting division and lacking a clear development agenda.
Opposition groups continue to organise meetings and rallies across the country as they work towards a unified candidate. Despite public commitments to unity, the selection process is expected to be influenced by regional interests and individual ambitions.
Separately, questions have been raised about the helicopter crash that killed Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno in Nandi County on 28 February. The aircraft reportedly attempted an emergency landing before catching fire, resulting in the deaths of six people.
DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malalah has called for further investigation into the circumstances of the crash. He said that Ng’eno had initially travelled in a different helicopter from Nairobi before being transferred to another aircraft. He also alleged that the flight crew had been changed, raising concerns about decisions made before departure.
Authorities have confirmed that an emergency landing was attempted but have not addressed claims regarding passenger transfers or pilot changes. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and no detailed report has been released.
Malalah has urged that such cases be examined thoroughly before burial, particularly when they involve senior public figures.
