President Ruto Pledges Support for Kenyan Diaspora in New York Address

President William Ruto met with Kenyan citizens living and working at the United Nations in New York during his visit to the Kenyan Permanent Mission.

In a statement, Ruto voiced the government's commitment to supporting its citizens abroad. The visit to the Kenyan Permanent Mission coincided with the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The President has introduced the new Labour Mobility Programme, a key initiative aimed at expanding opportunities for Kenyans in foreign countries. This program is designed to facilitate employment and success for Kenyan citizens globally, while simultaneously enhancing Kenya's international presence and influence. Ruto expresses pride in the significant number of Kenyans already making their mark at the UN, noting that over 1,800 Kenyans are currently employed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

During his address, Ruto interacted with various Kenyan professionals working at the UN, listening to their experiences and challenges. He assured them of the government's ongoing support and encouraged participation in the Labour Mobility Programme. The President also addressed broader issues affecting the Kenyan Diaspora, including immigration concerns, employment challenges, and social integration difficulties. He reiterated the government's dedication to tackling these issues through policy reforms and targeted initiatives. In addition to the Labour Mobility Programme, the Kenyan government has been developing various support mechanisms for its Diaspora.

These include establishing a Diaspora Policy which aims to create a favourable environment for Kenyans abroad to invest in their home country and strengthen ties with Kenya. The policy seeks to foster a sense of belonging and national pride among the Diaspora community. Ruto's administration has also focused on enhancing consular services for Kenyans abroad. This involves improving the efficiency and timeliness of services at Kenyan embassies and consulates, as well as establishing a dedicated Diaspora Affairs Office. These efforts are intended to ensure that Kenyans overseas receive necessary support, whether for legal assistance, passport renewals, or access to other government services.

The President's engagement with the Kenyan Diaspora at the UN is part of a broader strategy to harness the potential of Kenyans living abroad.
