Kenyan Denied by KDF, Now Staff Sergeant in the US Army

Kenyan-born soldier Caroline Omboto has attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, marking a significant milestone in her career as a dental specialist.

The promotion ceremony, held at the US Army Base in Vicenza City, Italy, was attended by notable figures including the CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Ezekiel Mutua. Mutua, who was in Italy leading a team of investors to explore collaborations between Kenyan and European artists, personally congratulated Omboto on her achievement. In her new role as Staff Sergeant, Omboto will oversee a squad of 9-10 soldiers, supervise enlisted personnel, and assist commissioned officers. The promotion reflects her leadership capabilities and also her dedication to her duties within the army.

Omboto expresses gratitude and excitement for this new chapter in her military career and acknowledges the support of those who have contributed to her success. Omboto's journey to this point has been one of perseverance and determination. Originally from Kitale in Trans Nzoia, Kenya, she initially attempted to join the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) but was unsuccessful in the recruitment exercise. Undeterred, Omboto travelled to the United States in February 2012 on an athlete visa. After obtaining a Green Card, she joined the US Army, embarking on a new path in the military.

Currently, she is serving a six-year contract set to conclude in 2024. In an interview with Mkenya Marekani, a YouTube channel that profiles Kenyans in the US, Omboto shared insights into her life and career. She reveals that she is a mother of three and joined the US Army after having her children. Throughout her service, she has continued to excel, earning recognition and now this significant promotion to Staff Sergeant. Beyond her military career, Omboto has gained popularity on social media, particularly on TikTok where she has amassed 1.3 million followers.

Her content often features aspects of her work as a soldier, as well as her interests in food and fashion. Her active presence on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook has allowed her to connect with a wider audience.
