I Bought the Multi-Billion Shilling Property in Nairobi CBD before Becoming Kiambu Governor- Waititu

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu says the property worth about Sh2 billion listed under his name was purchased long before he was elected governor.

Responding to widely circulated claims that he recently purchased multi-billion property in Nairobi's central business district using public funds after he became Governor, Waititu said his political rivals who want to unseat him in 2022 had resorted to spreading malicious rumors.

There were reports that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was investigating how Waititu had acquired the said properties with only 10 months in office. The Governor, commonly known as Babayao,  said he wasn't aware that the DPP was probing him on corruption allegations.

“Even as a Governor, I have every right to take loans from banks as long as we qualify and buy whatever we want to buy,” said the governor.

He admitted that he owns buildings in Nairobi, but stated that he acquired them through bank loans.

“When people start questioning what the other person owns, let them first go to the bank and ascertain the amount of loan on has. I am not forbidden from taking a loan. I can even take a Sh1 billion or Sh3 billion,” said Waititu.

“All these claims you are seeing even on social media that I have issued tenders worth over Sh500 million are being peddled by my rivals. They are all lies,” said Waititu.

While millions live in abject poverty, a few are talking of billions as if a billion to them is peanuts. Mungu saidia.
