Police Launch Daytime Alco-Blow Tests Targeting Kenyan Drivers

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet says traffic officers will be conducting daytime alco-blow tests on motorists during the festival season.
Boinnet says the change of tact is aimed at nabbing drivers who drive while drunk during the day.
Boinnet further notes that drunk-driving is the leading cause of road accidents in the country, stating that the breathalyzer tests will be crucial in curbing road carnage during the Christmas period.
"It is really aimed at getting rid of drunks hitting the road early morning while still groggy and not being in full charge of their faculties, hence risk killing themselves, or worse still murdering other innocent people." says the Inspector General.
"We have changed tact, those expecting us to do the drunk test in the night, we will also do the test in other hours of the day. We will particularly conduct tests in the morning."
Boinnet was speaking at Jogoo House in Nairobi on Friday during a ceremony where outstanding police officers were awarded.
“People have gotten used to finding alco-blow officers at on the highway at the late hours of the night and by 2 or 3 am in the morning they are gone, not anymore."

I am in Kenya a few times a year and the amount of alcohol consumed by both men and women in Kenya is mind boggling. It's not unusual for me to have an early morning meeting with people reeking of alcohol at 8am, in a Bank, insurance office or even government department. This happens on a Monday or Tuesday morning! Then again, I might be a bit more sensitive to the smell since I gave it up a few years ago.
