Retired Catholic Archbishop Raphael Ndingi Mwana ‘aNzeki has passed away after a long illness.
Ndingi, 88, is reported to have fallen ill on Monday night at Archdiocesan Clergy home where he was living and was rushed to Mater Hospital in Nairobi where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His passing was announced on Tuesday morning by Nairobi Catholic Archbishop John Cardinal Njue.
“A sombre morning as His Eminence John Cardinal Njue has announced the passing on of His Grace Archbishop Emeritus Raphael Ndingi Mwana a'Nzeki,” the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi said through Facebook.
The deceased was the bishop of Machakos Diocese between 1969 and 1971 before moving to Nakuru Diocese, where he served from 1972 to 1996. In 1997, Ndingi was named the Archdiocese of Nairobi where he served until his retirement in 2007.
In a message of condolence to the family, President Kenyatta described Ndingi as a loving and outstanding man of God whose servant leadership will be missed.
ODM leader Raila Odinga said: “Kenyans knew they could always count on him to stand and speak out for truth and justice whatever the threat that posed to his life.”
He added: “As a country, we will miss his distinguished service and dedication to humanity.”
