The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is seeking to raise Sh7 million to accord the late lawyer, Nzamba Gitonga a befitting sendoff.
The accomplished constitutional attorney died last Saturday after collapsing at a burial ceremony at his rural home in Mutito, Kitui County.
The budget for Kitonga’s funeral was revealed in a memo by LSK president Nelson Havi, who appealed to members to participate in the fund drive. The memo notes that the society can raise up to Sh5 million excluding the Senior Counsel Bar.
“The Law Society of Kenya wishes to give our colleague a formal sendoff in a hearing and/or church service to be held in Nairobi as well as a burial in Kitui on a date to be communicated in due course,” part of the memo states.
“…We humbly request that you find it in your heart to give towards this noble cause.”
Contributions can be wired to account number 4618380011 operated at NCBA Bank.
Kitonga who played a major role in the drafting of the 2010 Constitution died at the age of 64 and was regarded as one of the best constitutional lawyers in the country. He chaired the Committee of Experts (CoE) that drafted the 2010 Constitution.
He was among candidates shortlisted for the position of Chief Justice following the retirement of Willy Mutunga in 2015.
President Kenyatta described Kitonga as a constitutional law stalwart and a patriotic Kenyan with unmatched legal prowess.
“It is extremely sad that the cruel hand of death has snatched him from us at a time when our country is entering a constitutional moment,” President Kenyatta said in a message of condolence.

Many of these Legal thugs (for real) didn't Pass their Bar exams. They cheated from the Get-go.
...what a humble funeral it will be....only 7m....hum!
Siku hizi watu wachache wanafuata mazishi ya imani ya Kihindu: TEKETEZA kiwiliwili chake. Dada Wangari Mathaai na watu wengine mashuhuri waliacha usia miili yao iteketezwe bada ya kufa.
In due respect the man is dead can you sink a water well for the people in his village, with all that money. Our priorities are backwards that is why
Africa is where it is today. His spirit will always dwell among us but the body will return to the earth where it came from.
Let the Dead Bury the Dead. In fact the best Funeral on Earth costs 7K Shillings (not 7M). "WajingaNyinyi" as King Kaka said.
I totally agree with Maxiley.
This is an overkill.
Think about how many people would benefit from that money and leave a long lasting legacy, beside this one day wonder and all will forget him but his family.
7 million for what bwana. Use that money to employ law graduates that have no jobs. Let’s make sense sometimes
When will Kenya get things right? Targeting a certain number of millions to bury somebody ith all the poverty that is ravaging the masses?
But the dead a new lease in life! Why wast so much money while people are starving everywhere!
With all due respect, the distinguished lawyer deserves a good send off, however, isn't 7million a little excessive for a funeral, assuming the expenses will be incurred in less than 3 days?.I am lasting impressions want to be made. How about a afoundation in his name,or scholarship?
