Nairobi Governor Sonko Sends Two County Workers on Compulsory Leave over Fake Death Announcement

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has sent two county employees on compulsory leave over a false death alert.

The two are said to have sent an alert claiming that Dr. Robert Ayisi, a former county employee, had passed away.

In a statement on Monday, Nairobi County Director of Communication Jacob Elkana said the two have been ordered to proceed on compulsory leave to clear the way for investigations into the matter. Jacob said they sent the alert without first consulting the family.

“There was a technicality that happened. Some of our staff sent out the alert without proper consultation,” Jacob said.

The false alert prompted Governor Sonko to make a Facebook post announcing the passing of Ayisi, who served as the County Secretary and Health CEC. The post indicated that he succumbed to Covid-19.

Sonko later pulled down the post after it emerged that Ayisi was still alive and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Mater Hospital. He also promised to personally issue an apology to Ayisi’s family.
