Fake Cop Arrested Past Curfew Hours Conducting Night Patrols in Nairobi

Police in Nairobi are detaining a 40-year-old man for allegedly impersonating an Administration Police (AP) officer in Lang’ata.

The suspect identified as Gregory Simiyu Mabele was arrested past curfew hours on Friday while conducting illegal night patrols in the Southlands area of Lang’ata, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The DCI said he was caught walking around the area, pretending to be offering public safety and security services.

At the time of his arrest, he was dressed in AP uniform, including a patched jungle green camouflage sweater, and side-pocketed pants.

“Langata-based detectives are investigating how a civilian, Gregory Simiyu Mabele, donned in fatigues belonging to our sister service Administration Police Service (APS), impersonated a Police Officer and started conducting his self-assigned, illegal night patrols in Langata’s Southlands area,” the DCI said in a statement.

Police believe Simiyu is part of a wider cabal of criminals, who masquerade as police officers to defraud and steal from members of the public.

The suspect will be arraigned on Monday to face charges of impersonation, and being in unlawful possession of government stores contrary to Section 324 (2) of the National Police Service Act.
