Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has declared his interest in the city’s gubernatorial seat in next year’s elections.
Sakaja says he understands the county better than anyone, having served as a senator for Nairobi for nearly 10 years.
“I have been listening to a lot of people who even then were not in support but now, realize, that we need someone like myself who has been in this city, has seen all this level of leadership,” Sakaja said in an interview.
“Am currently the senator and that is the direction am heading to. To serve the people of Nairobi in the position of the governor with a proper vision of what we want to achieve within the next 10 years.”
Sakaja, who was elected under the ruling Jubilee Party, said he intended to run for the seat in 2017 but was forced to shelve the ambition due to the political dynamics at the time.
“That is why I switched to the senator. That did not change my dreams for this city. That didn’t change my vision for working capital of the global hub,” he added.
Sakaja believes he is the most suitable candidate for the seat, citing his knowledge and his track record in county affairs.
“You trust somebody with something small and see what they can do with it. In the last two terms I have been in parliament, I have been rated the best performing Senator by Mzalendo in terms of interventions, I have the highest number of Bills and legislation in both Houses that is why I was honored by the President with the Chief of Burning Spear.”
Others who have declared interest in the Nairobi governor seat include Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi and former Starehe MP Bishop Margret Wanjiru.

Nairobi needs smart city minded human who's brains work 24 7. Not some drunkards or revellers who switch out Friday to Tuesday. I don't know if Sakaja can do it. Mandago and Kibwana have proven to be useful governors. Experience in managing massive resources is critical. Young Turks are the worst.
NMS is the only positive legacy thug Uhuru will leave.Kenyans should amend the constitution to replace all 47 counties with NMS-type legal authorities under KDF.But all the current useless county heads, councilors and staff must be probed and mercilessly punished if guilty.
Nairobi is under the illegal NMS.
What did he do to try and stop that unconstitutional take-over?
Nothing.
He should go home peacefully.
Goodbye & Good-riddance.
Useless sakaja is after stealing revenues.. don’t see how suddenly he will transform Nairobi yet has failed as senator. Theft theft is all he is after
Nairobi does not need a mayor since NMS is doing a better job they need to continue. All these candidates are after the millions generated through taxes and levies all out to enrich themselves.Look at Sonko , Kidero all have been charged with theft
