Kenya Gov't Disburses Sh8.6 Billion to Over 1 Million Elderly Persons, Orphans, and Persons with Disabilities

The government has disbursed Sh8.6 billion to the beneficiaries of the Inua Jamii and the Nutrition Improvement through Cash and Health Education (NICHE) programmes.

The Ministry of Public Service on Thursday announced that the funds have been credited to the accounts of 1,071,856 beneficiaries of the Inua Jamii cash transfer programme.

Each of the beneficiaries will receive Sh8,000 being payment for November-December 2021 and January-February 2022 payment cycles.

“The cash transfer programme supports the most vulnerable members of the community by providing them with a stipend to cushion them from poverty, hunger and with the aim of improving their lives,” the Ministry said.

The Inua Jamii programme targets elderly persons, orphans and vulnerable children as well as persons with severe disabilities while NICHE combines social protection, nutrition, and child protection programmes.

The NICHE programme is implemented in the five major Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) counties of Kitui, Kilifi, Marsabit, Turkana and West Pokot where the level of poverty is high.

“The Ministry of Public Service, Gender, Senior Citizens Affairs and Special Programmes has adopted a multi-agency approach in the payment process involving the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, County Governments, Ministry of Health, elected leaders and Ministries’ field staff to ensure seamless coordination,” the ministry added.

The funds should be disbursed to anyone with a disability OR specifically all elderly people with disabilities in Kenya. Taita Taveta and many other counties have a high population of such poor people, why discriminate to inly a few counties? That’s Kenya for you! Pick and choose what gives political mileage!

I echo your sentiments & concerns here! There are elements of unfairness, discrimination & corruption here! Every vulnerable human being wishing these groups must get the cash regardless of which county they come from.
