Kalonzo Wins as Tribunal Clears Way for Azimio Rebrand to Ukombozi Alliance

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) has lifted its suspension on the registration of The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA), handing Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka a major victory in his effort to rebrand the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sitting on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the tribunal discharged the orders that had stalled the registration process for the coalition intended to replace the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
In a statement following the ruling, Kalonzo confirmed that the tribunal cleared all legal hurdles facing TUA's registration. He noted that the Registrar of Political Parties is now free to proceed and conclude the process, giving the united opposition a fresh lease of life.
The decision resolves a dispute that surfaced on October 13, 2026, when PPDT Chairperson Innocent Muganda temporarily blocked Azimio from adopting the new name. The temporary freeze followed a petition from a rival group claiming prior rights through the Ukombozi Peoples Party.
Records from the Registrar of Political Parties show that the name had already caused significant friction among rival political factions. In a letter dated September 8, the Registrar stated that the proposed name lacked approval and disclosed that another applicant had reserved 'Ukombozi Alliance' as early as July 20, 2026.
The dispute also involved Linda Mwananchi, a faction operating under The Equitable Party (TEP), which had reserved the name ‘Ukombozi’. Faction stalwart Edwin Sifuna was reportedly eyeing the united opposition’s presidential ticket under the banner.
Sources close to Sifuna rejected the Registrar's timeline, arguing that his group had proposed changing the United Democratic Party (UDP) to Ukombozi in March 2025, months before Azimio unveiled its rebranding plans.
With the legal barrier removed, Kalonzo takes over the leadership of the main opposition alliance from former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who served as Azimio chairperson. Kalonzo said that the newly cleared alliance will focus on accommodating additional political parties as realignments build up toward the 2027 polls.
