A review by the Daily Nation has counted 284 incidents of election-related violence and 46 deaths in Kenya, a toll the newspaper has described as "warning signs" ahead of the 2027 general election. The report, published by the Nairobi-based Daily Nation, documents politically linked violence recorded across the country in the build-up to the next national vote.

Kenya's next general election is scheduled for August 2027, when voters will elect a president, members of the National Assembly and the Senate, county governors and county assembly representatives. President William Ruto, who won the August 2022 presidential election, leads the current government, and Kenya's constitution requires general elections to be held every five years. A presidential candidate must secure more than half of all votes cast plus at least a quarter of the vote in more than half of Kenya's 47 counties to win outright.

The count places the run-up to 2027 in a long line of electoral violence in Kenya. The country's deadliest post-election crisis followed the disputed 2007 presidential poll, when violence killed more than 1,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands. The standoff ended through mediation led by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and cases later opened at the International Criminal Court over that violence eventually collapsed.

Deadly clashes have also flared around party nominations and voting in subsequent cycles. The Supreme Court annulled the August 2017 presidential election over irregularities, forcing a fresh presidential vote that October, and multiple deaths were reported around both polls that year.

The Daily Nation's tally of 284 incidents and 46 deaths provides a consolidated count of election-linked violence in the current cycle, one the newspaper has cast as warning signs for the 2027 contest. The figures cover politically driven violence documented before the next vote, according to the newspaper's reporting.

Alongside the violence data, the Daily Nation reported that lobby groups have moved to court to stop election violence ahead of 2027. The filing opens a legal avenue in the effort to prevent a recurrence of past poll violence before the August 2027 vote, according to the newspaper.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the body that administers national elections in Kenya, is expected to run the 2027 vote. It will be the fourth general election held under the 2010 Constitution, which created the devolved county governments whose seats will be contested alongside the presidency and parliament. The commission is also responsible for updating the register of voters, which contained more than 22 million names for the 2022 election.

Political positioning for the election is already under way. The Star newspaper has reported a split within the ODM party over a written pact with President Ruto, a dispute playing out publicly as politicians and parties begin arranging themselves for the 2027 contest.

The 284 incidents and 46 deaths documented by the Daily Nation form the running toll of election-linked violence recorded before campaigning for the August 2027 vote begins in earnest, while the lobby groups' court case represents a legal challenge aimed at stopping election violence in the same pre-election period.
