President Uhuru Announces Reduction in Unga Prices from Sh205 to Sh100

President Kenyatta has announced that a two-kilogram packet of maize flour will retail at Sh100 down from an average of Sh205, effective immediately until further notice.

Addressing the nation following talks with maize millers at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday, the president said the move is part of the government's stimulus program aimed at cushioning Kenyans against the current high cost of living

“I note with regret that the cost of a 2 kg pack of maize-meal remains out of reach for many, as it is currently retailing at an average of Sh205. As a consequence of this continued escalation in food prices, I today announce Fiscal Measures focused on food subsidy, as our Fifth Stimulus Programme covering the supply and distribution of our nation’s staple food–maize meal, across the entire country,” said Kenyatta.

Kenyatta announced the suspension of the Railway Development Levy (RDL) and the Importation Declaration Fee (IDF) on all imported maize into the country.

"This programme of a subsidy of Sh105 per 2kg pack of maize-meal is meant to lower the cost of living for the vulnerable households as we look for a sustainable solution to the recurrent rising price of unga every election," he said.

While calling out a section of the political class and millers over the rise Unga prices in the run-up to every general election, Kenyatta suggested that the maize flour crisis was not a coincidence.

"If the politician gets his votes out of it and the miller gets their profit, what does the common mwananchi get?  And in the end, who carries the burden of this mischief? The common mwananchi, of course!"

"If my appeal to the millers is to practice a reasoned level of social ethics, my appeal to the political class is to exercise civic responsibility.  To politicize the pain of the vulnerable without offering solutions is to mock the lifestyle of the same voters the politicians are appealing to," he added.

So what happens to those who had bought it for more than 100 shillings and must sell it at a higher margin to make a profit? Feed it to the cattle?

What is the agent of doom wsr going to say now? At least every Kenyan can now afford to eat Ugali. Every body should now be happy.

Mathenge he is going to say that’s bs. And that borrowing to lower the cost is actually increasing the overall cost of ugali. Repaying the loan with interest just to feed a people. He is going to say this conmanship of the high order to cosmetically lower the prices of ugali without a sustained plan.
He is going to say it’s nothing other than a campaign gimmick. Why would they not have done it 3 treats ago and only two weeks to end of his term? The Azimio chairman!

Eat ugali for ONLY 4 weeks? Politics aside, this move ain’t a solution to Kenya’s food insecurity or rather crisis.

The Eastern province more particularly MERU has been adversely impacted by a severe drought, absolutely zero harvest from the farms yet the cost of production was quite high. Currently a 50 KG bag of fertilizer costs Kshs. 7,000.00 and above!

Tanzania and Uganda has restricted exportation of their farm produce. We are not even assured if the average Kenyan citizens will have access to the subsidized maize because of the chronic corruption.

This will not be an overnight reality. Will the government buy back old inventory from retailers which was based on the 205 schilling price tag?

Who is the government? You are the government. You can simply answer your question just like you want to abdicate your government responsibilities and have others go look for answers for you.

It takes a true leader to lead a country. Uhuru has done a lot to keep the country afloat.

Ruto on the other hand ni self serving ndomo tupu. He is even complaining when the price of Unga has been reduced in half. All ruto knows is to express anger and bitterness.

Tony, listen, it’s not like Uhuru is doing any Kenyan a favor. If there’s anything he has done right is because he is doing what he is employed to do! Unfortunately he has run Kenya dead afloat into exorbitant loans that is marred with questionable companies. Offshore companies by name but run by the presidents agents.
Ruto and many other Kenyans are not complaining about ugali price reduction but the means and time at which this is done. The president cannot keep borrowing loans and try to brag about feeding the nation. That’s BS. Temporary fix just for campaigning. He has to establish a long term plan for for food sustainability.
It’s not not that the cost of food is reduced. It’s the other ugly side of repaying the loan with interest. Borrowing to reduce ostensibly subsidies ends up from ugali going up from Ksh 230 to about Ksh 300 to repay the loan.

Uhuru Kenyatta stop your conmanship with Kenyans. Well someone may ask why I’m begrudging the reduction of ugali. My only happiness is that it might save peoples life’s for a few weeks. The real issue is that Uhuru is borrowing loans just to temporarily feed a nation. Much of digging one hole to fill another one.
We have to remember this food subsidy is not only temporary but exacerbating the cost much too higher in terms of repaying the loan.
Uhuru is not doing his job. He is only handing a burden back to the people. The country needs a long term sustainable solution to especially its food security.
Kenyans are not fools and they really understand that this is nothing other than a carrot. A campaign gimmick. If this was the plan, why torment Kenyans to starvation for the last 3 years?
You had come up to say that the cost of unga and everything else is up because of Baltic war. As we know it’s not stopped.
Stop borrowing to cover your corruption. It’s more harm you are doing to the country by borrowing.

Mulevi wa Njohi has a couple more weeks! Dictatorial price controls have never worked! In business, that’s insane!

How about making sure that Brokeside milk doesn’t cost more than sh1???
