Shoplifter Bailed Out By Sonko in April Arraigned in Court for Similar Offense

A perennial shoplifter who was bailed out by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in April after being caught stealing foodstuff from a Naivas supermarket outlet in Nairobi has been charged with a similar offense.

Alvin Linus Chivondo appeared before a Nairobi court on Monday where he was also charged with a second count of being in possession of Cannabis Sativa with a street value of Sh2,000. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In April, a Nairobi court sentenced Chivondo to a year in prison or pay a fine of Sh100,000 after he pleaded guilty to stealing 5 litres of cooking oil, 5kgs of rice, ½kg of honey, ½kg of tea leaves, and 2kg of sugar worth Sh3,165 from Naivas Supermarket located at Development House, Moi Avenue in Nairobi.

While pleading for forgiveness, Chivondo told the court that he lost his source of income, adding that his family, including a four-month-old child, slept hungry for three days.

“I have a four-month-old baby and I couldn’t feed my family. Your honor, you can see I only stole food items. I can’t feed my family since I lost my job,” he said.

He was released from Industrial Area Prison two days later after Sonko paid the fine following uproar from Kenyans online, who termed the sentence as harsh. Sonko went further to give him one month’s worth of shopping as well as a job offer at his Upper Hill offices.

“We’ve offered Alvin Chivondo a job at our Upper Hill offices and our team in the office has shown him what his job entails. Am happy the young man is now free. It's my hope he will be a responsible man,” Sonko said then.

In May, the 21-year-old was arrested again at Naivas Supermarket on Ronald Ngala Street attempting to steal maize flour and was detained at Nairobi Central police station.

Alvin Chivondo has shown that he can be a good politician. He seems not to be content with what he has stolen so far and wants more and more. People of Lurambi! Listen up! Vote for Alvin Ling'ondo.

Indeed it's good to have a family, but why have afamily if you cannot feed and protect them?We are not as advanced as the USA,or such countries where the gov. can step in and make sure the kids eat, cloth, and sleep... generally speaking.
Sure, Iam aware that one can lose a job,or fortunes and struggle, but this fellow here does not fit the bill.To me he is a thief, who wants what others have worked for,for free...How much more an one to for such an individual.Sonko bailed him out.Got him ajob so that he does not have to steal to feed his family.Put him in prison. He brought this misfortunes unto himself.

True Comrade Maxiley,
Sometimes we have to use the belt on some of our children, not because we hate them, but love. It's painful for a parent, but down the line, they live to appreciate us more.
The only way he will learn is doing time.

Spot on@ Kora Kanini, for some of us had it not been for afew belts on our behinds -mostly, we would not be where we are. Kids will always test the limits of their parents... This is part of growing up and preparing to be independent some day.
You have to set boundaries while they are in your house. Not only that, but you have to be a good role model.A thief is certainly not a good role model. Even if she/he happens to be financially successful like Ruto.

Tell me does it makes sense to have kids just for the sake of having them? As I always say, kids are not toys. They need alot of love, dedication, care, and financial support. We are have developed from those days where man live like an animal, and that is impregnate, and disappear.
Can you really argue with what Iam saying. Does it not make sense to have kids when you can afford them? This is not to tell people not to have kids, but to build a nest first. Otherwise you will sleep in the cold, and burden the society with your ill planned parenthood.

@PPians, I dont know what you are smoking. It's clear here that Iam knocking people who "recklessly breed" like wild animals. There is this thing called planned parenthood. It entails calculated steps on how to have kids. There is good reason why parents discourage kids from having kids,or people who cannot handle parental responsibility. And dont assume that your thinking is the only right way to think. I did not create abortion, contraception, and homosexuality.Idont understand why you are connecting them to me?

I think what Maxiley is saying is that , its not good to commit crimes, and breaking the law when people under the same circusmtances are you are not becoming criminals to feed their families. The key issue is is committing crime to feed your family, that you created on your own,and punishing other people for it.This case here does not apply to all who steal to feed the family. This fellow was given a second chance, and blew it to break the law.Does he really love his family,or himself. If he loved his family he would be very thankful to Sonko, and the job he got. This family excuse is just to mitigate his criminal behavior.

Great point sir, unless there’s an underlying factor contributing to his apparent serial offenses. For one mental illnesses has a plethora of undesired effects I.e lack of impulse control which can induce addiction 🤷🏿‍♂️

Is it not better not to bring achild in the world as aburden,or have them suffer if the suffering could be avoided? Must we have kids under any circumstances?
