Chief Justice Martha Koome was chauffeured to the Madaraka Day celebrations in Embu County on Thursday in a luxurious Toyota Land Cruiser 300 GR Sport.
The car model has an estimated price tag of up to Sh20 million ($147,364). This new vehicle marks a significant improvement for the CJ's office, which saw retired CJ David Maraga struggle for many years with requests for a new taxpayer-funded car that were not fulfilled by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration.
In November 2019, the retired Chief Justice caused a stir in the nation when he spoke at a press conference and expressed regret that his office had not been given a Mercedes Benz. Justice Maraga blamed the government of then-President Uhuru Kenyatta for failing to take proper care of him.
Toyota hails their 300 GR Sport model as the most muscular Land Cruiser to date, powered by a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine. It includes special E-KDSS suspension, front and rear locking differentials, Gazoo Racing interior trim, matte grey 18-inch alloy wheels and an eye-catching glossy exterior design. This vehicle has many intricate features, such as a sunroof, black roof rails, side steps, rear privacy glass, daytime running lights, fog lights and headlight washers.
Additionally, the 2023 model includes a built-in refrigerated cooler with four-zone climate control as well as eight cup holders and four bottle holders. It also offers ventilated seats for the first and second-row occupants and a heated steering wheel.
Kenyans on Twitter have expressed their opinions about Chief Justice Martha Koome's vehicle. The Toyota Land Cruiser 300 GR sport has sparked conversations online, with some wondering why such an expensive car is being used when it is believed that the nation does not have money. Revered and flamboyant lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi commented on how ridiculous it is for a destitute third-world country with hungry children to spend $500,000 on one car.
"Tell me why a CJ of a poor third-world country where millions of kids sleep at night without food, with 1.5 million cases backlog, where it makes 10-15 yrs to hear a case and 6-12 months to deliver judgment will spend $500,000 to buy her 4th official car," he said.

Kenyans have a njinga bone in them. You just stated a reasons why we should not be buying such expensive cars for one person.
More examples. Africans attending meetings with lender countries. They fly first class and stay in 5-star hotels. The lenders fly economy or business class, stay with their diplomats. Tells you something.
The stupid bone in us continues to haunt us.
Gachagua was right. They inherited "very broke" government

You should be applauding KK Gova for bringing life to Judiciary.
It's sickening only poverty stricken Africa, the elite want to live a high class Western lifestyle like royalty amidst 26m below poverty line. This constitution must be resisted and revised
In a time when most kenyans are unable to put food on the table, fools are buying super expensive gas guzzlers while others are proposing 72M flamingo sculptures… these fools clearly live in a different Kenya
