Business Resumes in Nairobi Amid Heightened Security

The Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) has begun to regain its usual rhythm with businesses resuming operations amid a notable police presence.

Areas previously affected by the Gen Z protests including Moi Avenue, Tom Mboya Street, Accra Road, and River Road, are now bustling with activity. This return to normalcy comes in the wake of Tuesday's demonstrations, which disrupted daily life in the city centre. In response to the unrest, authorities implemented a ban on demonstrations within the CBD on Wednesday.

Today, law enforcement officers are strategically positioned throughout the area, equipped with riot gear including tear gas canisters and batons. A particularly notable deployment can be observed at Kencom which served as the focal point of the recent protests. The demonstrations erupted in opposition to the proposed Finance Bill and its associated tax increases. These protests quickly escalated, resulting in confrontations with law enforcement and several arrests.

Despite the current calm, an undercurrent of tension remains palpable in the city. Business owners and residents cautiously welcome the return to routine, expressing hope for continued stability. Law enforcement officials have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining order, urging public cooperation to prevent further unrest. The Gen Z protests have brought to the forefront the growing discontent among Kenya's youth who feel their concerns regarding unemployment and the rising cost of living are being overlooked.

The controversial Finance Bill has become a lightning rod for these frustrations, with many young people demanding government attention to their plight. In response to the unrest, President William Ruto has called for dialogue, encouraging young people to engage in constructive discussions rather than resorting to violence. The government has expressed willingness to listen and work collaboratively towards solutions that benefit all parties involved.
