A joyous celebration turned into a day of mourning as a group of women seeking blessings for their colleague Damaris Kathira was involved in a devastating road accident.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 1, 2024, as the women were returning from Kirirwa village, Meru County, to Rongai, Kajiado County. The accident happened on the notorious Nithi Bridge black spot in Tharaka Nithi County, claiming the lives of 10 adults and two children. The Toyota Hiace van they were travelling in collided head-on with a pickup truck, leading to a horrific scene that left emergency responders with little they could do to save the victims. The Nithi Bridge has been a known black spot for years, and despite repeated promises from politicians, little progress has been made to address the issue.
The latest accident has reignited calls for immediate action to prevent further loss of life. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to personally follow up on the matter and ensure that the bridge's reconstruction is expedited. Governor Muthoni Njuki has also urged the president to prioritize the project. The tragedy has cast a sombre mood over Kirirwa village, where the celebration took place. Ms Pamela Mukaba, speaking on behalf of Ms Kathira, expresses the community's grief and clarifies that not all seen dancing in the video have perished.
Dr Maurine Ogeto, the Medical Superintendent of Chuka Level Five Hospital, has announced that a support desk would be set up to assist families in identifying the bodies of their loved ones. The hospital is also providing counselling services to help the bereaved cope with their loss. The Nithi Bridge's steep descent and sharp curves pose significant risks to drivers unfamiliar with the road.
