Kenya Power has successfully restored electricity to several regions across the country following a major outage that plunged much of Kenya into darkness.
The company announces that power supply has been reinstated in parts of North Rift, Western, Central Rift, Nairobi, and Mt Kenya. Numerous major towns, including Nyeri, Embu, Kirinyaga, Nanyuki, Nakuru, Naivasha, Thika, Eldoret, Kericho, Kakamega, Siaya, Busia, Vihiga, Kisumu, Bungoma, and Webuye, have seen their electricity service resumed. In a statement, Kenya Power expresses regret for the inconvenience caused by the outage and requests patience from customers as efforts continue to restore normal services in the remaining affected areas.
The blackout, which occurred on Friday morning, impacted almost the entire country, with only sections of the North Rift and Western regions being spared. While the cause of the outage remains undisclosed, Kenya Power has assured the public that work is underway to restore power to all affected areas. This incident marks the second near-nationwide blackout within a week, raising concerns about the stability of Kenya's power grid. The previous outage, which took place just a week prior, had similarly left many parts of the country without electricity for several hours.
Kenya Power has faced criticism for frequent power outages and the perceived slow pace of restoration. The company has been working to upgrade its infrastructure to improve reliability, but challenges persist. In response to these outages, Kenya Power has mobilized its engineers and technical teams to address the issues promptly. The company has also been actively communicating with the public through social media to provide updates on the restoration process. The impact of the blackout was felt across various sectors, including businesses, hospitals, and households, with many relying on backup generators to maintain operations or struggling to carry out daily activities.
Kenya Power has been investing in various projects to enhance the country's power infrastructure, including the construction of new substations, upgrading existing ones, and expanding the transmission network. The company has also been working on integrating renewable energy sources into the national grid to diversify the energy mix and reduce reliance on hydroelectric power.
