The political leaders from the Mt. Kenya East region have endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their regional leader.
This endorsement, announced during a press conference on Monday, marks a crucial link between the Mt. Kenya East region and the executive branch of the government. The decision was made during a parliamentary group meeting held in Embu where legislators from Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Meru counties convened to discuss the socio-economic and political agenda of their region. They emphasized the need for a strong connection with the executive to expedite their regional priorities and secure stronger recognition in the national agenda.
"As the legislators of Mt. Kenya East, and on behalf of our people, we have unanimously agreed that the link between us and the executive is Prof. Kithure Kindiki," they said in a statement read by Mbeere MP Geoffrey Ruku.
The leaders expressed their gratitude to President William Ruto for appointing three Cabinet Secretaries from the Mt. Kenya East region, including Professor Kithure Kindiki, and urged the President to continue prioritizing the region in future job creation efforts. They believe that with Kindiki as their leader, the Mt. Kenya East region will gain stronger political influence and ensure that their priorities are effectively addressed at the national level. This endorsement comes at a time when the Mt. Kenya region is experiencing internal conflicts over leadership, with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua being one of the key contenders.
The support for Kindiki by the Mt. Kenya East leaders is seen as a strategic move to unify the region and strengthen its political standing. However, it is likely to add a new dimension to the ongoing power struggle within the region. The leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration and constant dialogue with the executive to ensure that their region's socio-economic development is prioritized.
Some of the elected leaders present include Geoffrey Ruku (Mbeere North), John Paul Mwirigi (Igembe South), Senator Alexander Mudigi (Embu), Mpuru Abuuri (Tigania East), Elizabeth Karamu (Woman Rep Meru), John Mutunga (Tigania West), Dan Kiili (Igembe Central), Gitonga Murugara (Tharaka), Pamela Njoki (Embu Woman Rep) and Kareke Mbiuki (Maara) and Mugambi (Buuri)
Gachagua faces challenges in unifying his political base in the Mt. Kenya region as rebellion continues to grow against his attempt to assert leadership over the area. Gachagua recently issued an ultimatum to his critics, warning them to align with his vision or face political consequences in the 2027 elections. However, this hardline stance has only served to further antagonize Mt. Kenya leaders who have made it clear that they will not accept Gachagua's leadership, despite the Deputy President's increased efforts to "unite" the region.
