Jesus Winner Ministry is facing scrutiny after a pledge of Sh20 million from President William Ruto sparked controversy and demands for the funds to be returned to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
In response to public allegations, the church’s secretary, Raphael Mweti, addressed the press on Thursday, March 6, to clarify the situation, stating the multi-million shilling amount was a pledge, not a cash donation, as had been alleged. According to Mweti, President Ruto made the pledge following a request from Bishop Edward Mwai, who informed the President of the church's plans to construct a larger sanctuary to accommodate its growing congregation.
While the funds have not yet been received, Mweti affirms that the church intends to accept the donation, which will be used for the building project on land purchased from Uchumi. The controversy began after a group of Kenyans, represented by lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, sent a letter to the Roysambu-based church, demanding the immediate return of the Sh20 million, which they labeled as proceeds of crime.
Njiru questioned the source of President Ruto’s donation, given that his publicly known salary is capped at Sh1.4 million per month. Njiru posits that accepting the funds could implicate the church in aiding and abetting corruption. Jesus Winner Ministry began in 2000 in the Zimmerman area and has since expanded to Roysambu.
Despite the ongoing criticism, Mweti emphasizes the church’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, "Our church motto is, accept one another as Christ accepted you. Our doors are open, and we do not discriminate against anyone based on their affiliations or status in society."
