Machakos County Assembly Erupts in Violence as Speaker Impeachment Bid Leaves Three MCAs Injured

The Machakos County Assembly was thrown into turmoil Tuesday as a renewed effort to impeach Speaker Ann Kiusya triggered violent clashes, leaving three MCAs injured and exposing deep fissures within the assembly.
Majority Whip Lucky Nzau sustained serious injuries requiring hospitalization, while Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka and Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi suffered minor injuries during the fracas. The conflict erupted within Kiusya's boardroom, pitting proponents of her removal against her defenders. Security personnel intervened, relocating Kiusya to a secure office as tensions escalated.
The impeachment motion, spearheaded by Deputy Speaker Mwanthi, accuses Kiusya of financial mismanagement and failing to provide accountability for assembly expenditures over the past two and a half years, alleging violations of legal and constitutional mandates. An earlier attempt to impeach Kiusya was halted by a court order. Anti-riot police were deployed to patrol the assembly grounds, where pro-impeachment MCAs staged protests, disrupting operations and voicing their demands.
“For the past two and a half years, she has never explained how money is spent in the Assembly. That means there are no records of any financial use. She keeps saying we should do oversight elsewhere, yet the law requires her to submit the same information every year to the Assembly.”
Supporters of Kiusya vowed to resist the impeachment, claiming the accusations are baseless. The turmoil in the assembly coincides with broader political instability in Machakos County. Governor Wavinya Ndeti is facing her own impeachment threat, which she attributes to allies of Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, her predecessor. Ndeti has accused Mutua of interfering in county affairs, intensifying the political rivalry.
"Mutua, you are not the governor of Machakos. Leave Machakos alone and let me run my Machakos," the governor warned.
