Joshua Kirui’s Family Shares Pain of Losing Kenyan Mountaineer to Everest Challenge

One year after the death of Kenyan mountaineer Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui on Mount Everest, his family is still grappling with the loss and navigating bureaucratic hurdles to formally acknowledge his passing.

Kirui, a seasoned climber from Nandi County, perished while attempting to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen, a feat achieved by only 2% of climbers.

The family's bereavement process has been compounded by difficulties in obtaining an official death certificate from Nepalese authorities, a crucial document needed to settle legal matters.

According to his elder brother, Enoch Kiplang'at, the past year has been incredibly challenging, though the family draws strength from Kirui’s adventurous spirit. Kirui launched his Everest expedition on April 18, 2024, declaring “Big Project 2024: Everest No-Ox” on social media. His attempt garnered significant attention in Kenya, where many followed his ascent.

Before his Everest expedition, Kirui established himself as a pioneer in African mountaineering, becoming the first African to ascend Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters) without supplemental oxygen in September 2023. He was also known for his speed ascents on Mt. Kilimanjaro, showcasing his exceptional endurance and skill.

A memorial service was held to honour Kirui, an avid reader, bringing together friends, relatives, and community members. His employer, KCB Bank, also paid tribute to his determination and legacy. To cope with the decision of his body remaining on Everest, the family has undergone counselling.

The loss of Kirui highlights the inherent risks of high-altitude mountaineering, especially without supplemental oxygen. Despite the tragedy, Kirui's family finds solace in his accomplishments and the inspiration he provided as a trailblazer in African mountaineering.
