A section of Kenyans living in the diaspora have joined calls by the opposition coalition National Super Alliance (NASA) to have the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announce presidential polls results at constituency level in the August 8th polls.
The group, led by Raila Odinga's presidential campaign liaison committee co-chair Joseph Nyarango, said that this will ensure no one rigs the elections.
"We congratulate the High Court judges Weldon Korir, Aggrey Muchelule and Enoch Chacha Mwita who declared null and void, the law that required presidential election results to be subjected to alterations at the national tallying centre," Nyarango said.
He added, "It should also be remembered that, the tallying of votes at the constituency level will allow Kenyan voters to own the process and witness how their votes are counted rather than leaving the crucial task to the top IEBC officials."
The team commended the United Nations special rapporteur Maina Kiai, Khelef Khalifa and Tirop Kitur, for challenging the law which left the presidential election results at the mercy of top IEBC officials.
"We now challenge Wafula Chebukati, the IEBC boss and his team to come clean on their motives for challenging the ruling made by the three judges," Nyarango said. Nyarango further said that Kenyans were tired of constitutional bodies siding with government instead of acting as independent bodies to safeguard national interests.
"We want to remind the (IEBC), that the demand by NASA to have the results declared at the 41,000 gazetted polling stations countrywide, as the final results in the presidential election is in tandem with the law and, any move to alter it will be a travesty to democracy and the spirit of free, fair, credible and verifiable election," said Fred Osewe of the Raila campaign diaspora team.
He added, "We wonder which interests the IEBC is serving when Kenyans expected the electoral body to portray neutrality in the management of an election. Kenyans cannot condone any acts of omission or commission that might submerge the country into another post-election fiasco like the one experienced in 2007."
"The relaying of final results from constituencies under the supervision of returning officers, agents, the media, internal and external election observers is the most transparent way of managing an election. Any steps to reverse this will be a tragedy to the country," Nyarango said. Nyarango cited the US where votes are counted at polling centers where the media captures the results as they trickle in.
"We need to promote this type of system in Kenya because of its authenticity and accuracy. The system will also ensure that, returning officers, election observers and agents are key in safeguarding and upholding a free and fair election," Nyarango said.
They challenged IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati to come clean on why he wants the results tallied at the national Center in Nairobi. "It's sad that when a mechanism geared towards safeguarding free and fair election is put in place, resistance from the electoral body and the government hits a crescendo. The jubilee government is trying to use every means to manage the election for a favorable outcome," Osewe said.
The team further lashed out at the Interior Cabinet Secretary accusing him of being biased against the opposition. "Nkaissery has in the past threatened NASA leaders with arrests merely because they are critical to the Jubilee government. It must also be remembered that civil servants are supposed to serve all Kenyans with impartiality irrespective of their political leanings," Nyarango said.

@Kenya, Typical condescending and negative response from a "looser and non-busy body". If you have nothing positive to say or a constructive positive criticism to give, then shut up - Period! Who cares which part of the world her represent nor who chose them as their rep; at least they are doing something. You have a right and an opportunity to come up and suggest what you think is best for our great nation instead of negatively attacking others.
@GG, nikome, who are you to tell me to shut up? I will write whatever I want and if you do not like it meza wembe. I repeat they are busy-bodies who have appointed themselves.
@ Kenya, the article clearly say a, " a section" of Kenyan diaporans; meaning they do not represent the entire Kenyan diaporans. So why and how does it concern you surely? You are not part of the "section" and they do not need your permission to appoint themselves. They have a right to represent or appoint themselves and represent their own "section". Freedom of speech require some common sense too.
@Bwana, ' Freedom of speech require some common sense too'. Also it does not support ignorance. It require you read the constitution and stop supporting ignorance.
They are political conmen just like the five PRETENDERS saying they will save Kenya and they have not saved themselves.
They have ALREADY saved themselves. That's why NONE of them went to the ICC.
How chose the people in diaspora to talk for other Kenyans...What is the use of IEBC as an institution if the court and people who support opposition are the one who is deciding for other Kenyans wish.
Heeeeee the busy bodies r reufegees in diasporas. The same busybodies said trump rigged elections against hillary. They r complainers n have no interest in the country. When somebody writes here u have a choice to read it or ignore it???This busybodies should read the constitution n they will b clear what it says about the presidencial votes????
The opposition was to steal elections in the help of some foreign masters n we know as usual who this evil society n foreigners represents but I will peacefully invite them to ready our sheria which says the presidential votes will b announced by chebukati at the national center not migingo island or Kisumu fish market
The constitution will dictate where the announcements for the presidential tallies will be made. I would want them announced at my mums house but I know that will not happen because it is contrary to the constitution. So, everyone hold your horses.
We know for some people they have a "baba" who decides for them. During the Constitution making he told them not read it as he would do it for them. Now he has decided where presidential results should be announced and that is the song they know. The loser has always claimed that elections that he does not win are rigged, this is the song they know. I don't really care where the presidential results are announced, they can even do it from Bondo, what I demand from IEBC is to ensure fully that the elections are free and fair and the results announced are the true will of the people. Further the internal CS is being accused of intimidation by these same people and he is doing is warning those who are beating drums of war against Kenyan. I will say lock them up. The clear message I see from NASA is either they win or there will be chaos. This attitude should be killed and the time is now.
These busy body should say which part of the world they represent and who choose them to be representatives eg. UK, Texas, Utah, Brazil etc. 'A section of Kenyan in diaspora' is such a broad term
