Late Catholic Bishop Cornelius Korir to be Accorded a State Funeral

Deputy President William Ruto says the late Catholic Bishop Cornelius Korir will be accorded a State funeral.

Addressing the congregation at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Eldoret on Sunday, Deputy President William Ruto said the late Diocese of Eldoret Bishop would be given a state send-off in honor of his contribution to peace in the country.

Ruto said the government will work with the church to give Korir a befitting send off. “The President has ordered that the government together with the Catholic Bishops organize Bishop Korir’s burial since he played a major role in advising the government and uniting Kenyans across the country and he also delivered more than his call in the church,” said Ruto.

Ruto, who was accompanied by Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos and MPs Alfred Keter, Sila Tiren, Oscar Sudi, Caleb Kostany and Vincent Tuwei praised Korir for his dedication in fostering peace in the country, especially during 2007/08 post-election violence.

Bishop Korir passed away on Monday at his home in Eldoret at the age of 67. He will be buried at the cathedral on Saturday.

Ah! Didn't think I could agree with you on anything, but on this one I do? No point in spending tax payers money on religious figures funeral. The Catholic Church is a rich entity and can take care of its own.

"State Funeral" what a shame. This is the soldier of God which calls for humility and simplicity, and wait the relatives and Catholics will be all for it. This is inappropriate and a waste of tax payers money. If we had an opposition whose goal was not only about ascending to power, this is the stuff they would be fighting. For now the tax payer will continue languishing.

Not a single penny should come from our national treasury and spent on this millionaire priest. As a billionaire William Ruto should donate the money to cover for all the funeral expenses of his friend and leave our national treasury alone.
