Meet Rael Mukeku, a Polyandrous Kenyan Woman

A Kenyan woman has opened up about her 'happy' marriage to two husbands. 35-year-old Rael Mukeku from Kathekakai village in Makueni County says she stays with the two men who are happy with the rare marriage arrangement.

While polygamous marriages are still common in Kenya despite slowly losing their place in today's society, it is rare to find polyandrous setting.

The mother of 11 says she married her first husband in 1992, aged only 10 after dropping out of school at standard two.

“I married my first husband in 1992 and we were blessed with our first child the following year. I have had 10 other children since then,” Ms Mukeku told Daily Nation.

After getting seven children with his first husband, the woman then married a second man despite living in poverty.

“The second husband came when I had seven children already. He didn’t like taking care of the children unless some of them were his and this is how we ended up getting more children,” she reveals.

The two men work as casual labourers but she says she does not regret marrying them or giving birth to several children.

“My only mistake is that I settled on men who are not rich, but this does not worry me much because they are caring and loving,” she says while recalling a recent incident where her husbands teamed up to care for her during an illness.

“One sold all his three goats and a kid to clear the hospital bill, while the other provided the money we needed for the day to day upkeep,” she says.

Her decision to take a second husband was informed by the failure of her first to meet her physical needs. Muema Nguu, who is 50, and sickly, wasn't able to 'satisfy' her so he agreed to the idea of having a co-husband but requested to first meet his would-be co-husband as a condition.

“It got to a point where he advised me to identify one man and officially introduce him,” she says. "It was a difficult decision. It was preceded by a difficult period in which I had become weak after suffering a long illness."

A deal witnessed by an elder and one of their adult sons was struck but at first Mr Nguu struggled to come to terms with the changes.

He says: “Upon realising that he had impregnated her I got mad and warned that such should not be repeated”.

He has since embraced his co-husband with whom they a lot in common. “My relatives are not happy with this arrangement, but every time they complain I remind them that they have refused to help me raise my children,” says Mr Nguu.

Ms Mukeku says that whenever the two men happen to be at home at the same time “they do not fight over anything because they agreed to be in this relationship”.

@ Sukari you may recall that one of my comments posited that in future women will probably have:

1.Husband- bread winner
2 Husband- sperm donner
3.husband- sexual stud
4Husband- male maid,...
This woman is way ahead. They only gripe I have with her is marrying at age 10.she did not have a legal mind to consent.
As for you, you are wise now and you can correct where you supposedly went wrong. There is still time for 1,2,3,4.... as long as you have breath in you.
Should you entertain the notion of having this union, please notify me so that I can give you pointers to ward through this potential land mine(and not Iam not in one,But I have the knowledge).Remember, this "union"is in its infancy, and like any software, glitches have to be worked out...Not to mention the social upheaval.

Ha ha ha Maxiley, I kinda agree, sperm donor, male maid, sexual stud, bill payer, heck life would be so good as long as one knows their space, hakuna kuvuka mpaka, mtu akae lane yake and their assigned duties... . And @sukari that is a valid concern, where did we go wrong except the 10 year old part and 11 children but two male with assigned duties and no jealousy, heck that is a a good arrangement. That is a true definition of a kept woman.

@ formerly guest 2, you too if you plan to test/taste the union,my pointers might help. But you seem to be well aware of what it would entail peace in the colony. It is a landmine,if kuvuka vuka laini gets out of line.Infact thats the hard part.Every one thinks laini yake could be the other one...The good news is that the queen can always replace the errant liner.
Actually if you put me on any of the lines except the bill payer I would be very happy.Just you.

"...true definition of a kept woman." I am glad you did not say 'well kept'. There is a reason this relatively young woman looks a bit worn out... overuse! Pale-pale will be thoroughly man-handled for all the care you get from this lover boys. You will be beat up like an old jalopy trying to keep all the co-husbands happy!

All the arithmetics are not on our side! Does she look 35 y/o to you? Hell nah! She looks 65! The first husband just needed the blue pill viagra and jumper cables! No need for second husband! So confusing to the kids. Anyway, let me arrest my judgmental thoughts, though it's unconventional, whatever float their boats!

I thought this woman was 70 years but astonishingly she is just 36. Being married at 10, 11 children later, you can't help but wonder who she could have been. Has life been kind to her? Could she have been a better MP or Govenor than our two female looters Waiguru and Ngilu if she lived life to the fullest? She blames herself for not marrying up but hey, how could she have known the difference at 10 years?

@Maxiley..ha ha, ha! Apart from giving birth at ten(that's criminal, but a debate for another day), I probably would drop of exhaustion! I mean, the thought of all those kids and two mules in tow is just mind boggling! I can't imagine where she gets the time and energy to be physical with hub no 2! With that in mind, I will give your kind offer a wide berth and watch this new trend from a distance!

@ Sukari, do you have any misgivings about this trend? Why watch from a distance?
Anyway, what this lady has done totally confirms what I have been saying, and that is, we as a society can shape our mores, and habits to suit members our community as needs and wants unfold.
Women are no longer the silent, and passive participants.
Hey remember that Kenyan woman who stired a hail storm for selling sex toys? Well apparently she was meeting ademand long ignored...It was here on the Peoples voice(mwakilishi).
These dicriminatory gaps that were created by society through ignorance, are quickly narrowing.Even in Saudi women can now drive, soon they will be demanding "the new trend".Now if you were in Saidi, Iwould advise you to watch from afar. Those sheiks get alittle eratic when their women demand as little a thing as changing asexual position.

Journalists!!! After exposing this 'young' lady and other less fortunate members of the society, can you as well help them in some way? May be Gofund me, etc? they were so honest to share their predicament in the first place!
And you did nothing on record as per your narrative?
Just saying...........
