Kenyan in the US Receives $25,000 Reward from Popular American TV Host Ellen Degeneres [VIDEO]

A Kenyan man in the US has received a $25,000 gift from popular American TV show host Ellen Degeneres to cater for his college fees.

Degeneres got the attention of the middle-aged Kenyan man only identified as Lawrence after he sent her a short video thanking her for her acts of kindness.

In a short interview with the media personality,  Lawrence says he moved to the US when he was 19 after winning a green card lottery. “I grew up in Kenya but after high school, I won a lottery to come to America and I went to New Jersey,” he explains.

He says he encountered racial discrimination in New Jersey, where locals made fun of his skin color and even his African accent. Lawrence, who works with the elderly as a nursing assistant, has been voted by his colleagues as one of the kindest people in the residence.

He says he always wanted to join college in the US but this has not been possible because he has been paying school fees for his sister and brother. He works 16 hours a day. “I sacrificed my college because my sister is currently in college and my brother is in high school,” he tells Degeneres.

The $25,000 reward was courtesy of Cheerios.

She need to come to Kenya and mentor all these gays coming out the closet. She is a very rich lesbian and Kenya is turning out to be a Mecca for gay people in Africa. The increased number of travelers from Nigeria to Kenya is partly due Nigerian gays looking for a green pasture in Kenya

Dr K.H, "she" has a name - Ellen. She is a "very rich TV host". She is human first before her sexuality! Ellen is a kind spirited person, akin to Oprah in my view. She a mix of humour, compassion, empathy and grounded. She has "it" rare in today's world. As for our brother Laurence, good to hear some positive things from someone so real. Well deserved gift.

Mwakilishi,
Some of these comments like the one above from Koni Hanene should honestly be rejected. What was his point other than spreading hate and misinformation. Why the matusi?

Dr. Koni Hanene. You're so homophobic! You oughta be ashamed of yourself so you regard yourself higher than the LGBT? Wonder how you manage to live outside the US with such attitudes. That kinda mentality only belongs in your village. Wakenya mnakuanga na ujinga sana saa zingine. Nkt

it doesn't matter what Ellen is - her sexual orientation is personal - the generosity she has shown to this young man is what we should be praising . this young man benefit is also Kenya benefit - as for paying school fee for his sister and brother it is his choice ( stop being sacastic). if he did not help them now he would do that to them and their children later in life . or choose to ignore them . what a man !

Guest 1 stupidity of the highest order. Just because I raise a concern about someone attacking LGBTQ you label me homosexual. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣wengine mnafanya na kufanyiwa worse than what you term as "bend-over" MF. How low can you get Guest 1?🤣🤣🤣🙆

Guest 1 and other homophobics here. Better stay in your village, get married in your village and die in your village with that kinda mentality. For your information, I'm very happily married with children and I also happen to live in a world where inclusivity is key. At this day and age homophobic MF like you have no place in this world. Judging someone by their sexual orientation, moreso someone like Ellen who has trumped over folks like you over and over is a futile endeavor. You like labelling people "Homosexual" as if that's even an insult. Guest 1 everyone bends over, if your mama didn't bend-over we'd likely not have pieces of s***t like you roaming around.

@Mgeni, wewe unaonekana ni mgeni kwa Guest1....she is here to stir the pot, then sit back and watch the rest of us hop and dance to her tune. Don't let her/him get under your skin. When someone is that hateful or against a community, more often than not is an indication that they are stifling something bursting to come out (no pun intended)! Guest1 may well be in the closet or into everything that moves, backwards, forward, sideways or upside down! Heck, how do we know? And more to the point, who cares? Whatever takes her/his fancy!
