Two Suspects Captured on Tape Stealing from Shoppers in Nairobi Arrested

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects believed to be part of a theft syndicate that mainly targets customers in high-end shopping malls.

The two have been identified as Rebecca Kinuthia Waruguru and Stephen Ochieng.

Police said the two were previously captured on CCTV stealing from people withdrawing money at ATMs in Garden City Mall and Thika Road Mall.

“We have questioned the two who have given us possible leads that will see more suspects arrested,” said Kasarani OCPD Peter Kimani.

Ochieng and Waruguru were arrested during an operation led by DCIO Mwenda Meeme in Kasarani on Thursday.

When questioned, Ochieng told detectives that he uses different vehicles because he operates a car hiring business while Ms. Waruguru said
she is a nurse aid.

Police also said Rebecca was filmed on several occasions making rounds at different shopping malls almost on a daily basis.

Do they rob customers at gun point or just pickpocket them! Whatever the case, the handshake is really bearing fruits! It's just a reflection of what our government is doing!

Lesson:When it comes to raising MPs salaries in parliament or stealing from shoppers at the mall, tribe is not a factor but a common cause is. We just need to channel this handshake/brotherhood towards positive changes.

To avoid falling prey to such fellas, be random in your operation. Do not maintain a routine that someone can monitor. After withdrawing money from bank in a shopping mall, do not go to your car to hide some money and then continue shopping. The CCTV system at the mall was installed to secure the mall but since someone is watching, it can also be a source of insecurity
